{"id":6719,"date":"2014-12-06T23:56:17","date_gmt":"2014-12-07T04:56:17","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.carleton.ca\/africanstudies\/?page_id=6719"},"modified":"2021-05-17T11:00:44","modified_gmt":"2021-05-17T15:00:44","slug":"b-g-s-program-requirements","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/africanstudies\/b-g-s-program-requirements\/","title":{"rendered":"B.G.In.S Program Requirements"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"body\">Students can study Africa within the <a title=\"BGInS home page\" href=\"http:\/\/carleton.ca\/bgins\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Bachelor of Global and International Studies degree<\/a>.\u00a0 The 20.0 credit\u00a0Honours B.G.In.S. degree has four components:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li class=\"body\">\u00a0A 4.5 credit core course sequence, mandatory for all students in the degree;<\/li>\n<li class=\"body\">13 Specialization,\u00a0of 7.5 credits each,\u00a0including a Specialization in Africa and Globalization;<\/li>\n<li class=\"body\">A language requirement; and<\/li>\n<li class=\"body\">An overseas experience requirement.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><strong>Specialization in Africa and Globalization<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The 7.5 credit <a title=\"BGInS Specialization in Africa and Globalization\" href=\"http:\/\/www.carleton.ca\/bgins\/africa-and-globalization\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Specialization in Africa and Globalization<\/a> allows you to focus your studies within the B.G.In.S. degree on Africa.\u00a0\u00a0The backbone of the Specialization is a set of AFRI courses offered by the Institute of African Studies across the four years of the program:\u00a0two<strong> Introduction to Africa <\/strong>courses in first year,\u00a0a choice of two courses focused on\u00a0the<strong> regions of Africa\u00a0<\/strong>in second year, \u00a0two courses exploring different <strong>themes in African Studies<\/strong> in third year, and finally a<strong> capstone seminar in African Studies<\/strong> in fourth year.\u00a0\u00a0 The rest of the Specialization offers a selection of courses in <strong>African history<\/strong>, <strong>African politics<\/strong>, <strong>anthropology of Africa<\/strong>, <strong>African literature and culture, \u00a0and African disapora studies.\u00a0 <\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a title=\"BGInS Africa and Globalization course listing\" href=\"http:\/\/www.carleton.ca\/bgins\/specialization-in-africa-and-globalization-2\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Complete course listing for the B.G.In.S. Specialization in Africa and Globalization<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"body\"><a title=\"AFRI courses in undergrad calendar\" href=\"http:\/\/calendar.carleton.ca\/undergrad\/courses\/AFRI\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Find the African Studies (AFRI) courses as they are listed in the Undergraduate Calendar.<\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>Language Requirement<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>All B.G.In.S students must achieve a level of language proficiency in a language other than English equivalent to two years of university language study.\u00a0 Students may satisfy this requirement either by taking the required courses or, for those students who already possess second language skills upon entry, demonstrating prior language proficiency.\u00a0 Prior language proficiency may be demonstrated either by producing suitable documentation or by taking a language test. <strong>Students in the Africa and Globalization Specialization must fulfill the language requirement with a language relevant to the study of Africa.<\/strong>\u00a0 The B.G.In.S. Program Director will maintain a list of acceptable languages.\u00a0 In the case of the language proficiency test, availability of the test in a given language will depend upon faculty resource availability.<\/p>\n<p><a title=\"BGInS language requirement\" href=\"http:\/\/www.carleton.ca\/bgins\/language-requirement\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Full details on the B.G.In.S. language requirement.<\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>International Experience Requirement<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>All B.G.In.S. Honours students must satisfy the international experience requirement.\u00a0 Students in the Africa and Globalization Specialization must satisfy this requirement either by taking the African Studies course abroad (AFRI 3100) or by doing a placement course related to Africa (AFRI 3900).\u00a0 The\u00a0<a title=\"IAS Study Abroad Course\" href=\"http:\/\/www.carleton.ca\/africanstudies\/undergraduate-studies\/ias-study-abroad-course\/\">study abroad course<\/a> is taught by a Carleton faculty member every May in an African country.\u00a0The <a title=\"IAS Placement Course\" href=\"http:\/\/www.carleton.ca\/africanstudies\/undergraduate-studies\/ias-placement-course\/\">placement course<\/a> enables you to carry out research and other academic activities at an organization working on Africa, which is a superb opportunity to allow you to gain important hands-on experience.<\/p>\n<p class=\"body\"><a title=\"BGInS international experience requirement\" href=\"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/bgins\/international-experience\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Full details on the B.G.In.S. international experience requirement.<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"body\"><strong>First Year Seminars<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>All first year BGInS students are encouraged to take a first year seminar (FYSM), which is a small enrollment (maximum 30) course focused on a particular subject area. FYSM usually also devote considerable attention to helping students develop the research, writing and presentation skills necessary to succeed at university.
