The past two weeks have been extraordinary in the life of Nigerians at home and in the diaspora. Youths in Africa\u2019s most populous country have taken to the streets in what has come to be known as the #EndSARS uprising to protest oppressive policing and inept political leadership that have ravaged the country. What began as peaceful protests escalated in the context of a military intervention that included the fatal shooting of protesters by firing squads. Opportunistic miscreants and suspected saboteurs have capitalized on the protests to loot and burn, further inflaming the agony of many Nigerians. The international community has responded with condemnation of the shooting of peaceful protesters on October 20th at the\u00a0Lekki<\/em>\u00a0and at Alausa Toll Gates in Lagos, the sprawling commercial capital of the country. Amnesty International reports that at least 12 people were killed\u00a0and \u201chundreds severely injured.\u201d The United Nations\u00a0Secretary-General, Antonio Guterres; the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS); the US Department of State, and many world leaders have been unanimous in their censure of the tyrannical crackdown against youthful protesters, and have called for full investigations.<\/p>\n

In response to the crisis in Nigeria, Professor\u00a0Nduka Otiono\u00a0of Carleton University\u2019s Institute of African Studies has convened a special virtual roundtable under the Institute\u2019s\u00a0Umeme: African Flashpoint Series<\/em>. Umeme is Kiswahili word for lightning, the perilous bolt of electricity flashing across the sky which demands attention and reactions.<\/p>\n

Invited speakers for the Zoom roundtable scheduled to take place on\u00a0Tuesday October 27th<\/strong>\u00a0(12 noon\u00a0Eastern Time\/\u00a05pm\u00a0West African Time) include:<\/p>\n

  1. Prof. Obijiofor Aginam<\/strong>,\u00a0Principal Visiting Fellow at UN University\u2019s International Institute for Global Health in Kuala Lumpur and Adjunct Research Professor of Law and Legal Studies at Carleton University.<\/li>\n
  2. Prof. Bonny Ibhawoh<\/strong>,\u00a0Professor and Senator William McMaster Chair in Global Human Rights at McMaster University.<\/li>\n
  3. Ms. Yejide Kilanko,\u00a0<\/strong>Bestselling author of\u00a0Daughters Who Walk This Path<\/em>\u00a0and therapist in children\u2019s mental health.<\/li>\n
  4. Comrade Abdul Mahmud<\/strong>,\u00a0Human rights activist and\u00a0President, Public Interest Lawyers League (PILL)<\/li>\n
