{"id":6516,"date":"2014-10-15T21:05:26","date_gmt":"2014-10-16T01:05:26","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.carleton.ca\/africanstudies\/?p=6516"},"modified":"2014-10-15T21:12:22","modified_gmt":"2014-10-16T01:12:22","slug":"research-artisanal-small-scale-mining-central-east-africa","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/africanstudies\/2014\/research-artisanal-small-scale-mining-central-east-africa\/","title":{"rendered":"Research on artisanal and small-scale mining in Central and East Africa"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>IAS researchers are part of collaborative research project on &#8220;Uncovering women\u2019s experiences in artisanal and small-scale mining in Central and East Africa.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>This week, Carleton University (the Institute of African Studies), Partnership Africa Canada and the\u00a0Development Research (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.pacweb.org\/en\/\" target=\"_blank\">PAC<\/a>) and Social Policy Analysis Centre (<a href=\"http:\/\/draspac.org\/\" target=\"_blank\">DRASPAC<\/a>, based in Kampala, Uganda) launched a new 3-year research project\u00a0aimed at providing an in-depth understanding of women\u2019s economic roles in artisanal and small-scale mining in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Rwanda, and Uganda.\u00a0Women perform a variety of roles in artisanal mining, from stone crushing to trading. In some mines, they make up 50% or more of the mining population. The project will explore conditions that shape women\u2019s access to economic resources and how these are affected by regulatory policies and reforms.<\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p>The project is supported through the\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.idrc.ca\/EN\/Programs\/Social_and_Economic_Policy\/grow\/Pages\/default.aspx\" target=\"_blank\">Growth and Economic Opportunities for Women (GrOW) program<\/a>, which\u00a0is jointly funded by the UK&#8217;s Department for International Development (DFID), the William and Flora Hewlett Foundation, and Canada\u2019s International Development Research Centre (IDRC). <a href=\"http:\/\/www.carleton.ca\/africanstudies\/people\/jennifer-hinton\/\" target=\"_blank\">Dr. Jennifer Hinton<\/a>, adjunct professor at the Institute of African Studies, is Carleton&#8217;s lead researcher on the project.\u00a0 Other Carleton researchers include Doris Buss, Blair Rutherford, Pauline Rankin, and Jennifer Stewart.<\/p>\n<p>For more information,
