{"id":7725,"date":"2015-08-21T18:47:58","date_gmt":"2015-08-21T22:47:58","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/carleton.ca\/africanstudies\/?p=7725"},"modified":"2015-08-24T18:48:18","modified_gmt":"2015-08-24T22:48:18","slug":"kiswahili-at-carleton","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/africanstudies\/2015\/kiswahili-at-carleton\/","title":{"rendered":"KiSwahili at Carleton"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Carleton University is pleased to be once again offering Introductory KiSwahili courses \u2013 LANG 1010A, Intro to Language 1: Kiswahili, in the Fall term and LANG 1020A, Intro to Language 1: Kiswahili, in the Winter term.<\/p>\n<p>This language is spoken by more than 60 million people in a number of countries in central and eastern Africa, including Kenya, Tanzania, Uganda, Rwanda and Burundi. It is the second language of some 135 million more, making it the most widely used language in sub-Saharan Africa. This introductory course will cover oral skills as well as basic reading and writing skills. There will also be an important emphasis on cultural practices of Swahili-speaking people. The instructor for the course is Dr. Abdulwahid Mazrui (PhD, Indiana University), co-author of Swahili: A Complete Course for Beginners.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Dr. Abdulwahid Mazrui<\/strong> is originally from Zanzibar, Tanzania.He has a BA Education from the University of Dar\u00a0<img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"  wp-image-7726 alignleft\" src=\"http:\/\/carleton.ca\/africanstudies\/wp-content\/uploads\/Mwalimu-Mazrui-400x445.jpg\" alt=\"Mwalimu Mazrui\" width=\"201\" height=\"224\" srcset=\"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/africanstudies\/wp-content\/uploads\/Mwalimu-Mazrui-400x445.jpg 400w, https:\/\/carleton.ca\/africanstudies\/wp-content\/uploads\/Mwalimu-Mazrui-160x178.jpg 160w, https:\/\/carleton.ca\/africanstudies\/wp-content\/uploads\/Mwalimu-Mazrui-240x267.jpg 240w, https:\/\/carleton.ca\/africanstudies\/wp-content\/uploads\/Mwalimu-Mazrui-360x401.jpg 360w, https:\/\/carleton.ca\/africanstudies\/wp-content\/uploads\/Mwalimu-Mazrui.jpg 414w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 201px) 100vw, 201px\" \/>\u00a0es Salaam, Tanzania and did his PhD \u00a0in Linguistics with a minor in African Studies at \u00a0Indiana University, Bloomington. He \u00a0has taught KiSwahili both in Zanzibar and \u00a0Arusha, Tanzania with the U.S. Peace Corps \u00a0and all levels of KiSwahili (Elementary to \u00a0Advanced) at Indiana University from 2003-2012. His research interests are in \u00a0Sociolinguistics, Second Language Phonology, Second Language Acquisition and \u00a0African Literature.
