Mzimela is a geographer, lecturer, and researcher in the Department of Geography at the University of Zululand, South Africa. She holds a PhD in Geography, and her work is informed by decolonial and feminist perspectives. Her research spans Indigenous Knowledge Systems, climate change adaptation, environmental governance, migration, and borderlands, with a particular focus on Southern Africa. Her work explores how Indigenous and marginalised communities experience and respond to environmental and socio-economic change. A central focus is the role of Indigenous knowledge in climate adaptation, livelihoods, and environmental decision-making.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">She also examines how colonial histories, gender, mobility, and governance shape access to land, resources, and livelihood opportunities. Within borderlands, her research considers cross-border mobility and livelihoods alongside questions of governance, cooperation, and peace, particularly where political borders intersect with longstanding social, cultural, and economic relationships. Dr. Mzimela has published in national and international journals and contributed to edited volumes. She has presented her work at conferences across Africa and internationally, engaging with debates on decolonisation, Indigenous knowledge, climate and epistemic justice, migration, and borderland governance. Her involvement in international research collaborations and scholarly networks provides further opportunities to bring Southern African experiences and perspectives into dialogue with research from other parts of the world. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Alongside her research and teaching, Dr. Mzimela is an Associate Editor of AlterNative: An International Journal of Indigenous Peoples and serves on the Steering Committee of the Canadian Institute for Advanced Research (CIFAR) Indigenous Research Initiative. She is also affiliated with the Society of South African Geographers, the International Geographical Union Commission on African Studies, and the Africa Indigenous Knowledge Research Network (AIKRN), hosted by Carleton University\u2019s Institute of African Studies.
