Merlyna&#8217;s research interests revolve around the mutual shaping of technology and society, especially digital media, information technology, data, social media, algorithms, and artificial intelligence, in relation to human connectivity and collectivity. Among her notable publications are <em class=\"myprefix-text-italic\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cambridge.org\/core\/elements\/abs\/social-media-and-politics-in-southeast-asia\/C9162DC3D2D71484FB0F640A6E61A2DA\">Social Media and Politics in Southeast Asia<\/a><\/em> (Cambridge University Press), <em class=\"myprefix-text-italic\"><a href=\"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/align\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/121\/Lim_JCM_RRR_2018.pdf\">Roots, Routes and Routers: Communications and Media of Contemporary Social Movements <\/a><\/em>(Sage), and <em class=\"myprefix-text-italic\"><a href=\"https:\/\/link.springer.com\/book\/10.1007\/978-3-7091-1340-0\">Online Collective Action<\/a><\/em><em><a href=\"https:\/\/link.springer.com\/book\/10.1007\/978-3-7091-1340-0\">: Dynamics of the Crowd in Social Media<\/a><\/em> (Springer).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Holding degrees in architecture and architectural engineering from the Institute of Technology Bandung (ITB) and University of Parahyangan (Unpar,&nbsp;<em>cum laude<\/em>) in Indonesia, Merlyna Lim received her doctoral degree in Science and Technology Studies (<em>cum laude<\/em>) from the University of Twente in the Netherlands. She is an&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/merlyna.org\/2022\/03\/20\/my-field-research\/\">inter and trans-disciplinary scholar<\/a>&nbsp;who has&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.merlyna.org\/publications\/\">published<\/a>&nbsp;extensively in various disciplines, including communication and media studies, urban studies\/sociology, geography, anthropology, religious studies, journalism, Asian studies, Middle East studies, information and library science, computer science and information systems (<em>see&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/merlyna.org\/publications\/\">publications<\/a><\/em>).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>An award-winning author and scholar, in 2016, Merlyna Lim was inducted into the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/research.carleton.ca\/story\/answering-call-royal-society\/\">Royal Society of Canada\u2019s New College of Scholars, Artists, and Scientists<\/a>,\u00a0 a recognition of her significant and multidisciplinary research contribution and leadership. On the 2020 International Women\u2019s Day, she was named one of \u201cTop 10\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/newsroom.carleton.ca\/story\/honouring-women-leaders-researchers\/\">International Women Leaders and Researchers<\/a>\u201c. Merlyna is a recipient of the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/ishistory.aisnet.org\/awards\/ais-best-information-systems-publications-awards\/\">2013 Best Publication Award in Information Systems <\/a>and the winner of the 2002 American Society of Information Science and Technology (ASIST) International Paper Contest. She was named one of \u201c100 Most Inspiring Indonesian Women\u201d by the Kartini Foundation in 2011, \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.inspiraloka.com\/alumni-itb\/\">One of 100 Most Prominent Alumni of ITB<\/a>\u201d in 2020, and one of \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/edurank.org\/uni\/university-of-twente\/alumni\/\">25 Notable Alumni of University of Twente<\/a>\u201d (2023).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>She has been awarded dozens of research grants\/awards from various institutions such as Canada Research Chairs, Social Science and Humanities Research Council (Canada), Canada Foundation for Innovation, the Ontario Research Fund, the National Science Foundation (United States), the Ford Foundation, the Volkswagen Foundation, the Open Society Foundations, and the Royal Netherlands Academy of Arts and Sciences (KNAW).
