Welcome to the Faculty of Arts and Science Research Centre in American Studies (RCAS). Our Centre was formed to bring together Carleton teachers and students who study the culture, history, and politics of the United States. The field of American Studies, as a distinct interdisciplinary specialization, has its roots in the (often conflicting) nationalist visions of the country during the Great Depression and the Second World War. Since then, the field has changed, embracing an increasingly rich and more sophisticated variety of critical social and cultural perspectives that seek to underline the complexities, paradoxes, and ambiguities involved in invoking the word “American” to describe something.
