{"id":347,"date":"2013-09-20T10:41:03","date_gmt":"2013-09-20T14:41:03","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www6.carleton.ca\/american-studies\/?p=347"},"modified":"2013-09-20T10:41:24","modified_gmt":"2013-09-20T14:41:24","slug":"the-rcas-welcomes-its-two-new-associate-directors","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/american-studies\/2013\/the-rcas-welcomes-its-two-new-associate-directors\/","title":{"rendered":"The RCAS welcomes its two new Associate Directors"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The Research Centre in American Studies is pleased to announce that Professors\u00a0<b>Michel Hogue<\/b>\u00a0(History) and\u00a0<b>Chris Russill<\/b>\u00a0(Communications) have become our new Associate Directors. After four years of service, Melissa Haussman and Andrew Johnston decided to take a break for a while from administration.\u00a0<strong>Chris<\/strong> is an Associate Professor in the School of Journalism and Communication. He completed his Ph.D in Communications at Penn State, and his M.A. and B. A. at York University in Toronto. His research focuses on\u00a0how we observe, know, and govern imperceptible environmental processes through media that register, record, and process otherwise undetectable environmental changes. \u201cI am especially interested in efforts to integrate diverse observational techniques into the design of early warning systems, a North American fascination since the 1950s that has produced a wide array of what I call \u2018precautionary media\u2019.\u00a0Precautionary media include weather forecasts, tropical cyclone and tsunami warnings, ultraviolet radiation alerts, seismic warnings, public health monitoring, and, of course, warnings of climate change danger.\u201d\u00a0<strong>Michel<\/strong> is an Assistant Professor of History who completed his Ph.D. at the University of Wisconsin, holds a BA from Simon Fraser and an MA from the University of Calgary. His research and teaching focuses on North American borderlands, First Nations history, M\u00e9tis, the fur trade, the history of the West, and native-newcomer relations.<\/p>\n<p>We want to welcome our most excellent colleagues Chris and Michel to their new posts.<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"Apple-style-span\" style=\"border-collapse: separate; color: #000000; font-family: Helvetica; line-height: normal; border-spacing: 0px; font-size: medium;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The Research Centre in American Studies is pleased to announce that Professors\u00a0Michel Hogue\u00a0(History) and\u00a0Chris Russill\u00a0(Communications) have become our new Associate Directors.
