{"id":350,"date":"2013-09-30T14:15:03","date_gmt":"2013-09-30T18:15:03","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www6.carleton.ca\/american-studies\/?p=350"},"modified":"2013-09-30T14:15:35","modified_gmt":"2013-09-30T18:15:35","slug":"release-party-earth-observing-media-issue-of-the-canadian-journal-of-communication","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/american-studies\/2013\/release-party-earth-observing-media-issue-of-the-canadian-journal-of-communication\/","title":{"rendered":"Release party October 4th: &#8220;Earth Observing Media&#8221; issue of the Canadian Journal of Communication"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The special issue of the <em>Canadian Journal of Communication<\/em>,\u2028guest-edited by our colleague Chris Russill, has just been published.\u2028 Entitled &#8220;Earth-Observing Media,&#8221; it brings together eight articles by\u2028leading scholars Canadian and American in a major contribution by\u2028Communication researchers addressing a serious blind-spot in the\u2028discourse on the environment, namely, its &#8220;dual use&#8221; grounding in both\u2028military and peace applications. The major technologies of earth\u2028observation that all carry humanitarian promises (open source and\u2028real-time accessibility) have their origins in conjoint military and\u2028corporate infrastructures. To quote Chris, &#8220;the articles and art\u2028assembled here disclose various forms of conceptual cleavage between\u2028security interests, scientific practice, peace-seeking, and commercial\u2028development.&#8221;\u2028The articles in the issue expand the range of media usually considered\u2028by scholars to now include radar, sonar, satellites, atomic clocks,\u2028GPS, drones, UV light detection, as well as radio, cartography, and\u2028computers.<\/p>\n<p>To celebrate this research achievement, we are holding a low-key and\u2028informal gathering for faculty members and graduate student in RB (River Building) \u20284310 on Oct. 4, from 3.30-5.30.
