What does Canada want during the last two years of the Obama administration and what we can reasonably expect to achieve? <\/span><\/p>\n

Conventional wisdom has it that nothing gets done during the final two years of a second term administration. But is Obama really a lame duck?<\/p>\n

Consider the following:<\/p>\n

    \n
  • The Canada-U.S. Free Trade Agreement was negotiated during the final two years of the Reagan administration.<\/li>\n
  • The Acid Rain Agreement and the NAFTA were achieved in the final two years of the George H.W. Bush administration.<\/li>\n
  • The Canada-U.S. Partnership which morphed into the Smart Border Accord was achieved during the last two years of the Clinton administration.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

    In each case, Canada knew its \u2018ask\u2019. The Harper government has a series of asks (KXL, Windsor-Detroit Bridge) and initiatives (regulatory cooperation and Beyond The Border). We have shared interests around international security, the financial system, the Arctic, and negotiating the Trans Pacific Partnership.<\/p>\n

    What can we realistically accomplish leading up to the American election … and how will the Canadian election factor into this?<\/p>\n

    Carleton University\u2019s Initiative for Parliamentary and Diplomatic Engagement invites you to attend a special panel discussion and reception.The conversation is for parliamentarians, interested diplomats and stakeholders.<\/p>\n
