What is the Indigenous Research Ethics Board (IREB)?<\/h2>\n

Carleton University\u2019s Indigenous Research Ethics Board (IREB) has been in development since the creation of the Kin\u00e0m\u00e0gawin Report in 2020. The Anako Indigenous Research Institute and the Office of the Associate Vice-President Indigenous Teaching, Learning and Research have worked closely with the Office of Research Ethics to finalize our IREB Policy and process (link). Any research proposals that involve research with Indigenous Peoples, Indigenous communities, Indigenous languages, Indigenous lands, waters and territories, Indigenous cultures and Indigenous knowledges must receive approval from Carleton University’s Indigenous Research Ethics Board.<\/p>\n

Process<\/h3>\n

The \u0100nako Indigenous Research Institute is dedicated to supporting researchers in their efforts to conduct meaningful and ethical research involving Indigenous participants and communities. The goal of the IREB is to support and review sessions to provide researchers with guidance and resources to strengthen their proposals prior to their submission to CUREB<\/a>. Any proposal submitted to CUREB that involves Indigenous participants and\/or communities, will be sent to the Indigenous Research Ethics Board for their review.<\/p>\n

The IREB support session will provide researchers with either suggestions and edits or approval based on a review of the proposal and assessment of their research project using our Indigenous Research Ethics Assessment Tool. If the proposal satisfies the initial IREB reviewer, the researcher will be provided a signed and locked Indigenous Research Ethics Assessment Tool document to submit alongside their CUREB submission.<\/p>\n

If the proposal does not meet the expectations of the IREB reviewer and there is a need to strike the board (meaning the proposal requires a full IREB review), the IREB reviewer will send your proposal for a full board review. The IREB reviewer will return with the IREB edits and suggestions for the researcher to complete. Once the edits and changes are made, the IREB reviewer will review the proposal to ensure it all changes are made and will sign and lock the Indigenous Research Ethics Assessment Tool for the researcher to continue their submission to CUREB A or B.<\/p>\n
