He talked about emerging from a country that hid its oppression of Indigenous peoples. Favel applied to theatre programs in Canadian institutions but was not accepted because of his Indigenous identity, accent, visual identity and geographic remoteness. Favel said he was inspired by <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.scot-suzukicompany.com\/en\/philosophy.php\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">Tadashi Suzuki<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> in Toga, Japan, who challenged theatre performed in the typical colonial manner and created a theatre method based on pre-colonial Japanese performance and movement. Attendees can learn up to 100 words and phrases of PISL during the workshops.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;134233117&quot;:false,&quot;134233118&quot;:false,&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559738&quot;:20,&quot;335559739&quot;:120,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Favel\u2019s students at Carleton <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/sics\/cu-faq\/cdns-5003-b-indg-4901-b-indigenous-storytelling-as-research-methodology\/\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">(Indigenous Storytelling as Research Methodology<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> [CDNS 5003 B\/INDG 4901 B]) have also been learning PISL and exploring how it can aid in the creation of Indigenous theatre practices. (Source: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thestoryoftexas.com\/discover\/artifacts\/lakota-winter-count\">Bullock Museum<\/a>)<\/p><\/div>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Favel is also looking at Waniyetu Wowapi, or winter count, <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">for another form of Indigenous performance methodology. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sdpb.org\/blogs\/children-and-education\/waniyetu-wowapi-winter-count\/\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">Waniyetu wowapi<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0is a Lakota storytelling practice used to document time through pictographs.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"TextRun SCXW28085036 BCX8\" lang=\"EN-US\" xml:lang=\"EN-US\" data-contrast=\"auto\"><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW28085036 BCX8\">PI<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW28085036 BCX8\">S<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW28085036 BCX8\">L and Winter Count are Indigenous systems<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW28085036 BCX8\">, created for and by Indigenous people,<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW28085036 BCX8\"> that can be starting points to understanding Indigenous theatre processes and methods<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW28085036 BCX8\">, Favel <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW28085036 BCX8\">said.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Favel said everything he teaches is derived from Indigenous systems and methods.
