You can find out more about using ePortfolios to assess learning outcomes in the Assessment section.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"what-makes-a-practice-high-impact\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">What makes a practice high-impact?<\/h2><p>George Kuh, director of the Center for Postsecondary Research at the University of Indiana-Bloomington, has identified five elements common among high-impact teaching practices.<\/p>\n<p>According to his research, teaching practices have high-impact when they are\u2026<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Effortful: Purposeful tasks that require considerable time and effort foster investment and commitment to the program and institution.<\/li>\n<li>Interactive: Opportunities to interact with faculty and peers build relationships, provides mentorship and allows for sharing of intellectual interests.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>\u2026and provide opportunities for:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Rich and Frequent Feedback: Allows student to see their progress and success as they learn.<\/li>\n<li>Application of ideas and skills to new situations: Using acquired knowledge in different settings gives meaning and value to learning experiences.<\/li>\n<li>Personal reflection: Reflecting on learning experiences can increase student\u2019s awareness of their own beliefs and assumptions.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2 id=\"high-impact-practices-at-carleton\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">High Impact Practices at Carleton<\/h2><p>Dr. Jim Davis is an associate professor in the Institute of Cognitive Science here at Carleton who has found ways to make student course work useful beyond the classroom.
