A Profile Analysis<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter size-full is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"768\" height=\"1024\" src=\"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/arc\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/85\/2025\/02\/image-3.jpeg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-328\" style=\"width:386px;height:auto\" srcset=\"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/arc\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/85\/2025\/02\/image-3.jpeg 768w, https:\/\/carleton.ca\/arc\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/85\/2025\/02\/image-3-512x683.jpeg 512w, https:\/\/carleton.ca\/arc\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/85\/2025\/02\/image-3-320x427.jpeg 320w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 768px) 100vw, 768px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Master&#8217;s student Ayushi Chitranshi presented her research on students&#8217; numeracy skill profiles.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Two main take aways from Ayushi&#8217;s presentation:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>I found four different numeracy skill profiles of students entering Grade 1:&nbsp; <strong>Profile 1 <\/strong>were consistently low performers (20%), <strong>Profile 2<\/strong> had low number knowledge skills but average relations and below-average operations (38%), <strong>Profile 3<\/strong> had high number knowledge skills, but average relations and operations (31%) and <strong>Profile 4<\/strong> were high performers in all three areas (11%). These findings demonstrated that heterogeneity is present in students\u2019 numeracy skills as they start formal schooling.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>These profiles were related to students\u2019 later mathematics achievement in Grade 2. I found that students with higher numeracy skill profiles (Profile 3, Profile 4) consistently outperformed those in lower numeracy skill profiles (Profile 1, Profile 2) across all assessed math tasks in Grade 2. These results demonstrate the persistent challenges faced by students in lower numeracy skill profiles and highlight the need for individualized, targeted educational interventions to support students\u2019 numeracy development.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Give Me Five: The Development of Quantity Recognition Undergraduate student Leah Marshall presented her research on children&#8217;s quantity recognition.
