In the Winter of 2018, the School of Architecture will offer two 6 week Options Studios abroad.  For this semester, we are especially fortunate that our students will be studying with outstanding faculty and practitioners in two great European centers: Madrid and London.

The first  international options studio (January 8 to February 16) was hosted in Madrid, where our students took a graduate design studio on Madrid’s urban waters, lead by Angela Paredes, of the noted Spanish firm Paredes Pedrosa Arquitectos, as well as a graduate seminar taught by Dr. Pablo Carbajosa.  The School of Architecture and Urbanism partnered – through Àngela Paredes – with ETSAM, where students had their studio space and access to the world-class facilities at the School of Architecture. Their studio (“Waterworks”) was inspired by the work of Juan Navarrao Baldeweg and included trips to Cordoba and Granada as well as explorations of the Guadalquivir River. In addition, students explored the rich tradition of social housing in Madrid with field visits to Vallecas, a bike tour of the Río Manzanares project with an architect from the office of Burgos y Garridos Arquitectos, in addition to taking in a Real Madrid game (or two).

Currently, the School has a second group of students (February 26 to April 11) in London, where they are working with Dr. Shaun Murray (Greenwich) on a design studio that explores the strange landscapes of the Thames.  In addition, those students are also taking a graduate seminar with Dr. Marko Jobst (Greenwich).  We’ll be updating this page – and our social media accounts – with snippets from student work and travel.
