Changes to the Architecture Building in the Context of a Transforming Campus

Presenters:  Scott Weir, BARCH/’93 MARCH/’00, Principal, ERA Architects; Benjamin Gianni, Associate Professor, Carleton University; Doron Meinhard, BARCH/’99, Associate Partner, Hariri Pontarini Architects; and Daniel Ling, BARCH/’99, Partner, Montgomery Sisam Architects.

Description: The Architecture Building — completed in 1972 – is facing serious life-cycle challenges including the need for energy retrofits.  And with plans underway to fully occupy the 5th-floor, the School is looking for innovative ways to knit the upper-story addition into the rest of the building while respecting and enhancing the architect’s original vision.  The context in which the building finds itself is also changing.  Along with the University Center, the new Health Sciences Building, and a new School of Business (currently under construction adjacent to the School), the Architecture Building will face on to a new “lower quad” to the south.

Come spend the afternoon with us discussing the future of the Architecture Building in the context of a changing campus.  We’ll begin at 2:00 PM with a presentation by Doron Meinhard on the Nicol Building – the new home for Sprott School of Business.  At 2:30, Daniel Ling will lead a tour through the new Health Sciences Building.  From 3:00 to 5:00 PM Scott Weir will lead a discussion on the opportunities and challenges associated with upgrades to the Architecture Building.  This session will include a small charrette in which participants will be given the opportunity to explore and present issues in sketch form
