Hercules in Light

I’ve been preparing asynchronous lectures on Greek and Roman architecture for the last three weeks, which means I’ve been looking at a lot of columns. In fact, not just looking at them, but marveling at them. What beautiful things! Such a simple idea, turned into such a varied, subtle and sophisticated form!

So today’s blog is just a photographic ode to the column (and to its very close cousin, the shaft). Here’s to the humble post, ennobled!
