A Conversation with Professor John Osborne
I’m teaching a course on medieval architecture and art this term, and I’ve decided that part of the content will take the form of podcasts. These will be informal chats with experts in various aspects of medieval art and culture. And, I’ll post them here, so that everyone can join in the fun.
My first is with Professor John Osborne, Distinguished Research Professor and Dean Emeritus in the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences at Carleton University. He’s also a Cavaliere Ordine al Merito della Repubblica Italiana (that’s the Italian equivalent of the Order of Canada), and an Honorary Research Fellow at the Courtauld Institute of Art in London. His most recent book, Rome in the Eighth Century, was published by Cambridge University Press in 2020. We chatted about some very basic issues, like when the Middle Ages were, and what the study of art and architecture bring to the study of history.
