Youth in Extended Society Care Tuition Assistance Bursary

Beginning Fall 2022, Carleton University established a new bursary program to support equitable access to post-secondary education for current and former youth in care. Up to 20 students (5 students per year) who will or have expired out of extended society care in Ontario without being publicly adopted may be eligible for a tuition assistance bursary for the fall/winter session. The CU Youth in Extended Society Care Tuition Assistance Bursary will cover tuition and compulsory fees for the fall/winter session (up to a maximum of $10,000) and $1000 towards books and supplies for the first year. This bursary may be continued for 3 consecutive years of undergraduate study provided you maintain full-time enrollment in an undergraduate degree program and remain in good academic standing.

Eligibility

• Apply and receive an offer of admission to Carleton University and meet the final admission conditions of the offer
• Entering the first year of full-time study in any undergraduate degree program (entering Fall 2025 for the 2025-2026 academic year)
• Pursuing post-secondary studies for the first time
• Canadian citizen, permanent resident, or landed immigrant
• Self-identify as youth in extended society care or expired out of extended society care/Crown Ward without being publicly adopted. A letter from the Children’s Aid Society to confirm a minimum of one year in extended society care will be required.
• Complete an OSAP application and provide supporting documentation (OSAP Verification of Status with Ontario’s Children’s Aid Society Form)
• Apply and receive funding through the full-time Ontario Student Assistance Program (OSAP) each academic year

Application process

Step 1:  Apply to Carleton University

You must apply to an undergraduate degree program through the Ontario Universities’ Application Centre (OUAC).

Step 2:  Self-Identify by June 30, 2025

If you’re interested in being considered for the CU Youth in Extended Society Care Tuition Assistance Bursary, please email the Awards Office at awards@carleton.ca with the subject line CUYouth in Extended Society Care. Make sure you send this email to us by June 30, 2025.  A letter from the Children’s Aid Society to confirm a minimum of one year in extended society care will be required.

Step 3:  Complete an OSAP Application

Apply for full-time OSAP when the application becomes available and submit all required supporting documentation including the OSAP Verification of Status with Ontario’s Children’s Aid Society Form.
