The survivor-centered approach is considered a cornerstone of good practice response to gender-based violence (GBV) in humanitarian and emergency contexts. Based on work undertaken over a number of decades by many hundreds of GBV practitioners across the globe, it has emerged as the approach that can offer persons affected by GBV the best immediate response and the best chance of long-term recovery. However, many businesses struggle to adopt this approach in their efforts to respond to incidents of sexual harassment in their workplaces or sexual exploitation of people in communities affected by their operations. Many ignore it entirely as they respond to GBV incidents with a focus on protecting their reputation and punishing perpetrators.<\/p>\n

This workshop will introduce BGInS students to the survivor-centered approach. Students will have an opportunity to assess how well the survivor-centered approach has been applied in case studies of business responses to GBV incidents. They will also have an opportunity create ideas for tools that might better support businesses to adopt this approach. This topic is relevant to research I will be commencing in 2022, to explore both good practices and concerning practices of personnel in businesses who have been assigned responsibility for managing GBV risks and incidents. In that research, I will be especially looking at evidence of how well these personnel understand and are applying the survivor-centered approach in their GBV work.<\/p>\n
