BGInS core courses<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The core course sequence is designed to give BGInS students a common foundation in global and international studies and serve as an introduction to the various themes and issues which students can examine in more depth in the 18 Specializations. After completing the mandatory 4.5 credit sequence for the Honours degree or 4.0 credits for the General degree, students will have an understanding of the world we live in from a wide variety of disciplinary perspectives. In addition, the core courses are designed to encourage inter-disciplinary dialogue, challenging students to think outside the usual disciplinary boundaries<\/p>\n\n\n\n

First year<\/strong>
\nGINS 1000<\/strong> Global History provides a background and context for the contemporary global order.
\nGINS 1010<\/strong> International Law and Politics introduces the international state system and the challenges of international co-operation.
\nGINS 1020<\/strong> Ethnography, Globalization and Culture examines the intersection of globalization processes with social and cultural diversity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Second year<\/strong>
\nGINS 2000<\/strong> Ethics and Globalization introduces students to debates on global ethical issues and challenges them to think about their role as an ethical global actor.
\nGINS 2010<\/strong> Globalization and International Economic Issues examines the workings of the global economy.
\nGINS 2020<\/strong> Global Literatures introduces students to the global dynamics of the contemporary literary imagination.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Third year<\/strong>
\nGINS 3010<\/strong> Global and International Theory is an advanced analysis of global and international theory from a variety of theoretical perspectives, many of which will have been introduced in earlier core courses.
\nGINS 3020<\/strong> Places, Boundaries, Movements and Global Environmental Change examines the relationship between individual places and global social and environmental changes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Fourth year<\/strong>
\nHonours Seminar in Global and International Studies. A variety of seminars will be offered each year, focusing on a different theme or issue; students are required to choose one. All seminars require integration of knowledge across different areas of emphasis in global and international studies
\nHonours Research Essay, a major research paper is also required.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
