Building on its expertise on Russia, Central and Eastern Europe, and Eurasia, in recent years the Institute has developed particular strengths in European Union Studies and works closely with Carleton’s Centre for European Studies, a European Union Centre of Excellence.

Students taking the Europe and Russia in the World Specialization will enrich their understanding of international affairs and global processes gained from their BGInS core courses with specific regional knowledge about Europe, Russia, and Eurasia. They will take core courses that introduce them to the interdisciplinary study of the region drawing on both social science and humanities approaches. The required courses in the specialization provide students with knowledge about the region’s history, literature and culture, economics and politics, current affairs, and international issues. Capstone seminars in their fourth year allow students the opportunity to address some of the complex issues facing the region. Students are required to fulfill their BGInS language requirement in one of the region’s languages in order to allow them greater depth and understanding of one or more societies and cultures of the region. Students are encouraged to continue to take language courses beyond the minimum requirement, especially if planning to study or work abroad on one of Carleton’s many international exchange opportunities.

Europe and Russia have very significant importance in shaping larger global processes and the international balance of power. These factors, along with the expanded economic opportunities in the area, have led to an increase in the demand for specialists in the history, economics, politics, languages and cultures of the region.

The Specialization in Europe and Russia in the World provides students with valuable preparation for a career in:

Government Service

Non-Governmental Organizations

International Organizations

Business or Finance

Students may also use their skills to continue on to more specialized training in law, business, and related academic disciplines.
