In Europe, the ongoing arrival of thousands of people each day is testing the borders between nations and their commitment to international humanitarian and human rights law. It is also challenging us ethically to clarify the extent of our obligations to those within and outside our borders. Yet alongside these dilemmas, the unraveling of austerity measures and political crises are calling into question the ability of the traditional nation state to manage the affairs of its people. Greece is amongst the countries most affected by the rapid increase of people migrating to its shores. However its challenges go deeper than its new arrivals. This panel discussion will explore issues of migration, belonging, and citizenship in Europe today and the related campaigns being launched to transform the ways that contemporary states manage emigration and related entitlements. It is also about the ways in which various campaign strategies are being used to propel new human rights agendas through institutional, popular, and local mobilization.

Click here for the poster for this event.

A FILM AND ROUNTABLE DISCUSSION THURSDAY DECEMBER 3, 2015 4:30 – 6:30pm 417 St. Patrick’s Building Tina Palivos, Yale U and Generation 2.0 for Rights, Equality & Diversity Baki Youssoufou, We Sign It Lucia Cantero, San Francisco State University Chaired by Kamari Clarke Migration has become the focus of many headlines throughout the world.
