Congratulations on your admission to the College of the Humanities! You will be joining other exceptionally accomplished students from across Canada in an immensely stimulating four-year intellectual adventure. Your new peers are a talented group of people: artists, musicians, actors, budding scholars, and creative writers. What unites the diverse range of interests, expectations, and ambitions is a genuine love of learning, new ideas, books, and conversation. To get a better idea of what to expect this year, take some time to read carefully the attached document “Your Program at a Glance” that the faculty have prepared for you.

As a prelude to the beginning of formal classes, you are expected to participate in our Academic Orientation at the College on Tuesday, September 5th. This mandatory session is part of the University’s Fall Orientation; the agenda for the session is attached. A B.Hum. alumnus and the academic advisor of your program will be here to provide you with an introduction and orientation to this fascinating journey you are about to begin.  You will also have a chance to meet the professors who will be teaching you over the next four years and of course your fellow students. Please note there are two schedules for students:  Bachelor of Journalism and Humanities Schedule and Bachelor of Humanities Schedule.

The College supports a program of music, theatre, and opera to supplement your course work. First year students are invited to participate in the annual First Year Field Trip to Montreal on Sept 15th & 16th.  This trip includes transportation to and from Montreal, accommodations at Hi-Montreal Hotel, a visit to the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts and concert tickets to see Les Violons du Roy at Salle Bourgie.  Students will also have lots of time on both Friday night and Saturday to explore the city. Thanks to the generous support of the College of the Humanities the price is only sixty dollars, but sign up soon, spots are limited and the trip usually sells out long before Labour Day.  To guarantee a spot, please send a cheque for 60 dollars made out to Carleton University. Stay tuned for other cultural opportunities throughout the academic year!

Finally, please mark your calendars for the evening of Thursday September 14th.  There will be a Welcome Reception for first years to meet fellow students in other years and the professors in the College. I and all of my colleagues, faculty and staff, look forward to meeting you on September 5th. Enjoy the rest of your summer!

Yours sincerely,
Shane Hawkins
Director, College of the Humanities
