{"id":4564,"date":"2019-05-07T15:55:59","date_gmt":"2019-05-07T19:55:59","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/bhum\/?page_id=4564"},"modified":"2025-06-13T14:31:08","modified_gmt":"2025-06-13T18:31:08","slug":"language-requirement","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/bhum\/language-requirement\/","title":{"rendered":"Language Requirement"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Please note, the regulations regarding the language requirement below are applicable <strong>ONLY<\/strong> to students admitted in Fall 2023 to 2025.\u00a0 Students admitted in earlier years should <a href=\"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/bhum\/language-requirement-students-admitted-earlier-than-fall-2023\/\">consult this page<\/a> or check with the Undergraduate Administrator or Faculty Academic Advisor for more information and advising.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Students in both the <strong>Bachelor of Humanities<\/strong> and <strong>Bachelor of Humanities and Journalism<\/strong> must satisfy a Language Requirement as part of their degree.<\/p>\n<p>Students in the <strong>Bachelor of Humanities and Biology<\/strong> are <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">exempt<\/span> from the Language Requirement.<\/p>\n<h2>\u00a0Language Requirement<\/h2>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Language Requirement is proficiency in <strong>either<\/strong> an Ancient language at the Beginner&#8217;s level <strong>or<\/strong> a Modern language (other than English) at the Intermediate level:<\/p>\n<h4>1) Beginner-level proficiency in an ANCIENT language<strong>:<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>This normally requires just <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">one<\/span> full year (1.0 credit) of study at Carleton.<br \/>\nAn ANCIENT language is normally one of Greek, Latin, Biblical Hebrew, etc.<\/p>\n<h4>2) Intermediate-level proficiency in a MODERN language (other than English):<\/h4>\n<p>This normally requires <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">two<\/span> full years (2.0 credits) of study at Carleton.<br \/>\nA MODERN language is normally one of French, German, etc.<\/p>\n<h2>How to Satisfy the Language Requirement<\/h2>\n<div class=\"slideme\"><dl class=\"slideme__list\"><dt class=\"slideme__term\"><a href=\"#slideme-coursework\" aria-expanded=\"false\" aria-controls=\"slideme-coursework\" class=\"slideme__heading slideme__trigger\">Coursework<\/a><\/dt><dd class=\"slideme__description\" id=\"slideme-coursework\" aria-hidden=\"true\"><p><\/p>\n<p>Students who enter Humanities without sufficient skill in a second language, or who wish to learn a new language, can satisfy the Language Requirement by completing courses up to the required level. For Ancient languages this normally means one year (1.0 credits) of study to reach the required Beginner&#8217;s level. For Modern languages this normally means two years (2.0 credits) of study to reach the required Intermediate level.<\/p>\n<p><\/p><\/dd><dl><\/div>\n<div class=\"slideme\"><dl class=\"slideme__list\"><dt class=\"slideme__term\"><a href=\"#slideme-advanced-language-placement\" aria-expanded=\"false\" aria-controls=\"slideme-advanced-language-placement\" class=\"slideme__heading slideme__trigger\">Advanced Language Placement<\/a><\/dt><dd class=\"slideme__description\" id=\"slideme-advanced-language-placement\" aria-hidden=\"true\"><p><\/p>\n<p>Depending on the results of their Placement Test (see below), students who are already somewhat proficient in a Modern language may be able to register immediately in an Intermediate level course, reducing their time of study from two years to a single year (1.0 credits).<\/p>\n<h4>Placement Tests<\/h4>\n<p>If you already have some proficiency in the language you will study at Carleton and wish to register immediately in an Intermediate level course or above, or you wish to obtain a Language Waiver by demonstrating your present proficiency, you must complete a language Placement Test.<\/p>\n<h4>French<\/h4>\n<p>French language Placement Tests are administered by the Department of French. Visit their website and click on <a href=\"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/french\/\"><u>French Placement Test<\/u><\/a> in the index. Note that you must complete the online Placement Test before enrolling in <strong>any<\/strong> French course at Carleton, even if you have had no previous French instruction. You can only take this test once. <a href=\"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/french\/undergraduate\/ba-requirements\/\">More information.<\/a><\/p>\n<h4>Modern Languages other than French<\/h4>\n<p>Testing and instruction in all other Modern languages is offered by the <a href=\"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/slals\/\"><u>School of Linguistics and Language Studies (SLALS)<\/u><\/a>.\u00a0 Note that you must complete a Language Background Questionnaire (LBQ) in order to determine whether or not you need to complete a more comprehensive language Placement Test. Information on Placement Tests can be found on <a href=\"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/slals\/modern-languages\/placement-test\/\"><u>their website<\/u><\/a>. Questions about testing can be sent to <a href=\"&#x6d;&#x61;&#x69;&#108;&#116;o:&#x6c;&#x61;&#x6e;&#103;&#117;ag&#x65;&#x2d;&#x70;&#108;&#97;ce&#x6d;&#x65;&#x6e;&#116;&#64;ca&#x72;&#x6c;&#x65;&#116;&#111;n&#46;&#x63;&#x61;\">them<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><\/p><\/dd><dl><\/div>\n<div class=\"slideme\"><dl class=\"slideme__list\"><dt class=\"slideme__term\"><a href=\"#slideme-language-waiver\" aria-expanded=\"false\" aria-controls=\"slideme-language-waiver\" class=\"slideme__heading slideme__trigger\">Language Waiver<\/a><\/dt><dd class=\"slideme__description\" id=\"slideme-language-waiver\" aria-hidden=\"true\"><p><\/p>\n<p>A student may have their Language Requirement waived if they are already proficient in a Modern Language at the Intermediate level, as demonstrated by either:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Secondary school language of instruction:<\/strong> Students whose secondary school transcripts show that their primary language of instruction in secondary school was a language other than English.<\/li>\n<li><strong>French immersion:<\/strong> Students who have successfully completed Grade 12 French immersion or the equivalent at a Canadian high school. Grade 12 core French is not sufficient for an exemption.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Proficient speakers:<\/strong> Students who do not qualify under either of the first two categories, but who nonetheless are able to demonstrate proficiency in a language other than English, may be granted a Language Waiver. For languages taught at Carleton, \u201cproficiency\u201d means a level at least equivalent to the Intermediate level. For languages not taught at Carleton, \u201cproficiency\u201d means a level at least equivalent to two full years of university level language study. Proficiency may be demonstrated either through documentation (e.g. certification from a recognized language testing authority) or through a Placement Test (see below) result equivalent to the Intermediate level or above.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>If you wish to have your Language Requirement waived, please <a href=\"http:&#x2f;\/&#x63;o&#x6c;&#108;&#x65;&#103;e&#x6f;f&#x68;&#117;&#x6d;&#97;&#x6e;&#105;t&#x69;e&#x73;&#64;&#x63;&#117;&#x6e;&#x65;t&#x2e;c&#x61;&#114;&#x6c;&#101;t&#x6f;n&#x2e;&#99;&#x61;\">email us<\/a> with documentation.<u><br \/>\n<\/u><\/p>\n<p><\/p><\/dd><dl><\/div>\n<h2>Registration Guide<\/h2>\n<p>Decide whether you wish to satisfy your Language Requirement with an Ancient or a Modern Language, or by having your Language Requirement waived.<\/p>\n<h4>Language Waiver<\/h4>\n<p>Follow the instructions given above to have your Language Requirement Waived.<\/p>\n<h4>Ancient Language<\/h4>\n<p>In your first year, register in 1.0 credits in Greek, Latin, etc.<\/p>\n<h4>Modern Language<\/h4>\n<p>Write the Carleton Placement Test in that language (see below). The Placement Test will tell you one of three things:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li><strong>You are not proficient enough to start an Intermediate course:<\/strong> In your <strong>First Year<\/strong>, register in 1.0 credits in Beginner\u2019s level language. In your <strong>Second Year<\/strong>, register in 1.0 credits of an Intermediate level language.<\/li>\n<li><strong>You are proficient enough to start an Intermediate course:<\/strong> In your <strong>First Year<\/strong>, register in 1.0 credits of an Intermediate level language.<\/li>\n<li><strong>You are already proficient at an Intermediate level: <\/strong>You can apply to you have Language Requirement waived. You are of course free to spend the elective that replaces it on a language if you wish.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<h3>Bachelor of Humanities (BHUM Students)<\/h3>\n<p>Please consult this <a href=\"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/bhum\/wp-content\/uploads\/BHUM-Language-Requirement-Flowchart-March-9-2023-1.pdf\">BHUM Language Requirement Flowchart\u00a0<\/a> to get a better sense of your options.<\/p>\n<h3>Bachelor of Humanities and Biology Students (BHUM Bio)<\/h3>\n<p>Note that students in this stream <strong>do not<\/strong> have a Language Requirement. They are, of course, free to take a language if they have room for it in their schedule.<\/p>\n<h3>Journalism and Humanities Students (BJHUM)<\/h3>\n<p>First Year BJHUMS students will fall in to one of four categories below when registering for their first year courses.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The Language Requirement is waived:<br \/>\n<\/strong>The requirement is now complete<br \/>\nIn 1st year register in RELI 1731 and a 0.5 elective.<br \/>\nIn 2nd year, register in an elective at the 2000 level or above that replaces the language requirement.<\/p>\n<p><strong>With previous language experience and a placement test, enrollment in an intermediate modern language is possible:<br \/>\n<\/strong>The requirement is now complete (assuming successful completion).<br \/>\nIn 2nd year take RELI 1731 and a 0.5 elective.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The language requirement will be satisfied with an Ancient Language<\/strong>:<br \/>\nThe requirement is now complete (assuming successful completion).<br \/>\nIn 2nd year take RELI 1731 and a 0.5 elective.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Starting at the beginner level in a modern language:<br \/>\n<\/strong>In 1st Year take a Beginner\u2019s level Modern language.<br \/>\nIn 2nd year take the Intermediate level of the same Modern language.<br \/>\nThe requirement is now complete (assuming successful completion).<br \/>\nIn <strong>only<\/strong> this case, BJHUM students <strong>do not take<\/strong> RELI 1731 and a 0.5 elective at all.<\/p>\n<p>Please consult the <a href=\"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/bhum\/wp-content\/uploads\/BJHUM-Language-Requirement-Flowchart-March-9-2023.pdf\">BJHUM Language Requirement Flowchart<\/a> for a visual representation of how this requirement works.<\/p>\n<h3>Details about Certain Languages<\/h3>\n<div class=\"slideme\"><dl class=\"slideme__list\"><dt class=\"slideme__term\"><a href=\"#slideme-ancient-languages\" aria-expanded=\"false\" aria-controls=\"slideme-ancient-languages\" class=\"slideme__heading slideme__trigger\">Ancient Languages<\/a><\/dt><dd class=\"slideme__description\" id=\"slideme-ancient-languages\" aria-hidden=\"true\"><p><\/p>\n<p>Common language with which to satisfy your Requirement are:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Greek:<\/strong> GREK 1005 &amp; 1006<\/li>\n<li><strong>Latin:<\/strong> LATN 1005 &amp; 1006<\/li>\n<li><strong>Hebrew:<\/strong> HEBR 1904\/RELI 1011 (1.0)<\/li>\n<li><strong>Sanskrit: <\/strong>RELI 1015 (1.0)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><\/p><\/dd><dl><\/div>\n<div class=\"slideme\"><dl class=\"slideme__list\"><dt class=\"slideme__term\"><a href=\"#slideme-modern-languages\" aria-expanded=\"false\" aria-controls=\"slideme-modern-languages\" class=\"slideme__heading slideme__trigger\">Modern Languages<\/a><\/dt><dd class=\"slideme__description\" id=\"slideme-modern-languages\" aria-hidden=\"true\"><p><\/p>\n<p>Common language with which to satisfy your Requirement are:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>American Sign Language:<\/strong> ASLA 2010 &amp; 2020 or ASLA 2110 (1.0)<\/li>\n<li><strong>Arabic:<\/strong> ARAB 2110 (1.0)<\/li>\n<li><strong>Chinese (Mandarin):<\/strong> CHIN 2010 &amp; 2020 or CHIN 2110 (1.0)<\/li>\n<li><strong>French:<\/strong> FREN 1100 (1.0) or above<\/li>\n<li><strong>German:<\/strong> GERM 2010 &amp; 2020 or GERM 2110 (1.0)<\/li>\n<li><strong>Italian:<\/strong> ITAL 2010 &amp; 2020 or ITAL 2110 (1.0)<\/li>\n<li><strong>Japanese:<\/strong> JAPA 2110 (1.0)<\/li>\n<li><strong>Korean:<\/strong> KORE 2010 &amp; 2020<\/li>\n<li><strong>Portuguese:<\/strong> PORT 2110 (1.0)<\/li>\n<li><strong>Russian:<\/strong> RUSS 2010 &amp; 2020<\/li>\n<li><strong>Spanish:<\/strong> SPAN 2010 &amp; 2020 or SPAN 2110 (1.0)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><\/p><\/dd><dl><\/div>\n<div class=\"slideme\"><dl class=\"slideme__list\"><dt class=\"slideme__term\"><a href=\"#slideme-modern-languages-less-often-offered\" aria-expanded=\"false\" aria-controls=\"slideme-modern-languages-less-often-offered\" class=\"slideme__heading slideme__trigger\">Modern Languages less often-offered<\/a><\/dt><dd class=\"slideme__description\" id=\"slideme-modern-languages-less-often-offered\" aria-hidden=\"true\"><p><br \/>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.carleton.ca\/slals\/\"><u>The School of Linguistics and Language Studies (SLALS)<\/u><\/a> offers courses in a given language in response to student demand. For some languages, experience in recent years has been that there is not enough student demand to offer instruction beyond the Beginner&#8217;s level. Languages offered in recent years at the Beginner&#8217;s level, but\u00a0<strong>not\u00a0<\/strong>at the Intermediate or higher levels, include Anishinaabemowin (Ojibway), Hungarian, Kiswahili and Kurdish.\u00a0Students choosing to study these languages may therefore have to find Intermediate level language instruction at another institution in order to complete their Language Requirement.<\/p>\n<p><\/p><\/dd><dl><\/div>\n<div class=\"slideme\"><dl class=\"slideme__list\"><dt class=\"slideme__term\"><a href=\"#slideme-intensive-languages\" aria-expanded=\"false\" aria-controls=\"slideme-intensive-languages\" class=\"slideme__heading slideme__trigger\">Intensive Languages<\/a><\/dt><dd class=\"slideme__description\" id=\"slideme-intensive-languages\" aria-hidden=\"true\"><p><\/p>\n<p>Beginner-level courses in certain languages, such as American Sign Language and Japanese, are very intensive, requiring more than the normal 3 hours per week of classroom time. Students planning to take one of these languages to complete their Requirement must be prepared to manage their time efficiently.<\/p>\n<p><\/p><\/dd><dl><\/div>\n<div class=\"slideme\"><dl class=\"slideme__list\"><dt class=\"slideme__term\"><a href=\"#slideme-summer-french-immersion\" aria-expanded=\"false\" aria-controls=\"slideme-summer-french-immersion\" class=\"slideme__heading slideme__trigger\">Summer French Immersion<\/a><\/dt><dd class=\"slideme__description\" id=\"slideme-summer-french-immersion\" aria-hidden=\"true\"><p><\/p>\n<p>Students studying French should consider the <a href=\"https:\/\/englishfrench.ca\/explore\/\"><u>Explore Summer Immersion Program.<\/u><\/a> Participation is usually free, and it is one of the best ways to begin or improve your French language skill.<\/p>\n<p>If you are planning on doing an Explore exchange, consult the <a href=\"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/registrar\/letter-of-permission\/\">Registrar\u2019s o\ufb03ce site<\/a> for information on receiving Carleton credit. Students who complete an Explore exchange after admission to Carleton will have their level of proficiency evaluated by Carleton\u2019s French department.
