And while it may seem incongruous that somebody with employers such as the Toronto International Film Festival (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.tiff.net\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">TIFF<\/a>) and the Canadian Opera Company (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.coc.ca\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">COC<\/a>) on her resume <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=2MWte9pk-Ho\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">has found a home in tech<\/a>, Hadi says it\u2019s a great fit because of her skills as a communicator and openness to new languages \u2014 a toolbox she attributes to her experience at Carleton.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe ability to pick up on key terms, understand technical frameworks and do research,\u201d she says, \u201call of this comes from my time at the College of the Humanities. There\u2019s a lot of emphasis on how the program helps you develop as a person, but it also gives you intense hirable skills, which is how I\u2019ve been able to switch jobs so seamlessly.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cIt made me into a bit of a Swiss army knife.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Hadi\u2019s career path has been delineated by her interests and motivations, but like the journey of her fellow humanities graduate\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.pascalearpin.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Pascale Arpin<\/a>\u00a0\u2014\u00a0an accomplished sign painter and freelance artist who you\u2019ll read about a little later \u2014\u00a0it speaks to the wide range of options available to people with a holistic education.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"u-block u-block--full\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"u-width-full\" src=\"https:\/\/newsroom.carleton.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/HU1C5D1.jpg\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1200px) 100vw, 1200px\" srcset=\"https:\/\/newsroom.carleton.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/HU1C5D1.jpg 1200w, https:\/\/newsroom.carleton.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/HU1C5D1-400x227.jpg 400w, https:\/\/newsroom.carleton.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/HU1C5D1-300x170.jpg 300w, https:\/\/newsroom.carleton.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/HU1C5D1-768x435.jpg 768w, https:\/\/newsroom.carleton.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/HU1C5D1-700x397.jpg 700w, https:\/\/newsroom.carleton.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/HU1C5D1-200x113.jpg 200w\" alt=\"Amanda Hadi\" width=\"1200\" height=\"680\" \/><\/div>\n<div class=\"u-block u-block--white\">\n<div class=\"u-width-small\">\n<h2 align=\"center\">Confidence to Explore New Paths<\/h2>\n<p>Hadi grew up in Ottawa with parents who had emigrated to Canada from Israel and the West Bank and worked as a surgeon and paralegal. But they didn\u2019t bat an eye when she decided to follow her older brother Jason into Carleton\u2019s Humanities program.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cI was jealous of the history, philosophy and literature courses he was taking, mostly in small intimate classes,\u201d she says.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>\u201cI love the opportunity it gave somebody like me who, at 17, was super indecisive. The courses were flexible. There were choices within choices.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCarleton and the humanities gave me the confidence and skills to be fluid and explore different paths. It made me into somebody who has a passion for community and the things that communities produce.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>After graduating, Hadi moved to Toronto to pursue a master\u2019s degree in Art History at the University of Toronto, then went on to work in a series of increasingly senior roles with TIFF, the COC and the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/ago.ca\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Art Gallery of Ontario<\/a>.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_72989\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\">\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-full wp-image-72989\" src=\"https:\/\/newsroom.carleton.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/HU5C871.jpg\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1200px) 100vw, 1200px\" srcset=\"https:\/\/newsroom.carleton.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/HU5C871.jpg 1200w, https:\/\/newsroom.carleton.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/HU5C871-400x227.jpg 400w, https:\/\/newsroom.carleton.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/HU5C871-300x170.jpg 300w, https:\/\/newsroom.carleton.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/HU5C871-768x435.jpg 768w, https:\/\/newsroom.carleton.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/HU5C871-700x397.jpg 700w, https:\/\/newsroom.carleton.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/HU5C871-200x113.jpg 200w\" alt=\"Amanda Hadi\" width=\"1200\" height=\"680\" \/><\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-caption-text\">Amandi Hadi speaks at the Toronto International Film Festival (Photo: Nick Wons)<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>Her focus broadened from traditional print communications to digital and social media \u2014\u00a0\u201cthe scaffolding on which modern life is lived,\u201d she calls it \u2014\u00a0and her suite of skills expanded.<\/p>\n<p>While she was directing and producing online and in-person projects for large organizations, Hadi continued to volunteer with filmmakers and indie arts groups including, for the past six years, helping run Toronto\u2019s award-winning\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/atgtheatre.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Against the Grain Theatre<\/a>. The innovative opera company is best known as the first in Canada to produce and livestream an entire opera,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbc.ca\/arts\/this-reimagined-version-of-la-boheme-is-set-in-a-toronto-bar-and-you-can-watch-it-live-1.5306003\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">La Boh\u00e8me<\/a>, which premiered in 2019 on CBC Gem.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019ve always loved the arts and it was fun to get paid to do what I love,\u201d she says.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cEverybody I worked for until Shopify has been a non-profit that relies heavily on government grants and donations, which forces you to be really creative.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Considering her digital experience and technical fluency, Hadi sees Shopify as a natural progression. Although she does illustrations and paints canvasses and has brought film and TV props and sets to life, her niche these days is custom sign painting and hand lettering \u2014\u00a0a traditional style that adorns the windows of about five dozen local businesses, including hip spots like\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.lvcoffee.ca\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Little Victories Coffee<\/a>\u00a0on Bank St., Crows Nest Barber on Wellington St. and The Third in Hintonberg.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_72969\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\">\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-full wp-image-72969\" src=\"https:\/\/newsroom.carleton.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/humanities-grads-diverse-fields-1200w-5.jpg\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1200px) 100vw, 1200px\" srcset=\"https:\/\/newsroom.carleton.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/humanities-grads-diverse-fields-1200w-5.jpg 1200w, https:\/\/newsroom.carleton.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/humanities-grads-diverse-fields-1200w-5-400x227.jpg 400w, https:\/\/newsroom.carleton.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/humanities-grads-diverse-fields-1200w-5-300x170.jpg 300w, https:\/\/newsroom.carleton.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/humanities-grads-diverse-fields-1200w-5-768x435.jpg 768w, https:\/\/newsroom.carleton.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/humanities-grads-diverse-fields-1200w-5-700x397.jpg 700w, https:\/\/newsroom.carleton.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/humanities-grads-diverse-fields-1200w-5-200x113.jpg 200w\" alt=\"Pascale Arpin\" width=\"1200\" height=\"680\" \/><\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-caption-text\">Pascale Arpin<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>\u201cI followed a winding road to get to my current obsession,\u201d says Arpin, who is arguably the city\u2019s foremost practitioner of this intricate, ornate old-school craft.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cI always found it aesthetically pleasing but didn\u2019t know how to do it. It looks like something you can create effortlessly, but you really have to understand the brush stroke and technique.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Carleton\u2019s Humanities program, she says, \u201chelped me understand the world and why the world is the way it is today.\u201d Moreover, as a francophone, it also gave her a nuanced grasp of English, which has been critical throughout her career.<\/p>\n<p>After graduating, Arpin was awarded a scholarship to pursue a master\u2019s degree in Sociology but instead moved to Iqaluit, where she lived for six years and did a series of jobs, from early childhood educator and youth arts programmer to a position with the Nunavut Arts and Crafts Association.<\/p>\n<p>Although she was learning a lot about the business of arts, Arpin didn\u2019t want to settle into a desk job, so she returned to freelance illustration and began working in film as a set decorator, scenic painter and props master. It\u2019s a local economy of businesses supporting one another.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>The connections Arpin made while working with Meyer, who she has continued to learn from, led to a meeting with Hollywood filmmaker Tim Burton in Las Vegas.
