More specifically, the research is focused on microbial food spoilage and plant pathology. The lab’s main focus is the use of alternatives to synthetic chemicals to control the growth of microorganisms on crops and during food storage. The resulting effects of this research is meant to increase food yield and reduce food loss, which can have a positive impact on food security and environmental sustainability.

Roughly 50 per cent of all food produced in Canada is thrown away before it reaches anyone’s plate. Dr. Avis spoke with Dan Rubinstein about the work the lab has been doing to explore the use of beneficial microorganisms to outcompete the bacteria, viruses and fungi that damage or destroy plants.

read more about this exciting research here!

Dr. Avis and his team are exploring how beneficial micro-organisms can combat mold and food waste. The Avis Lab studies both fundamental and applied aspects of food and plant microbiology.
