His research is focused on the molecular basis for the adaptation to low oxygen in cardiovascular disease. Cardiac arrest and stroke are the result of clots that block the flow of blood (ischemia) to portions of the heart and brain. During ischemia, cells sense a decrease in oxygen (hypoxia) through a process called protein hydroxylation.
