{"id":490,"date":"2010-10-28T14:12:04","date_gmt":"2010-10-28T18:12:04","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/carleton.ca\/biochem\/?p=490"},"modified":"2025-05-01T12:05:03","modified_gmt":"2025-05-01T16:05:03","slug":"flavelle-medalist-credits-carleton","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/biochem\/2010\/flavelle-medalist-credits-carleton\/","title":{"rendered":"Flavelle Medalist Credits Carleton"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<section class=\"w-screen px-6 cu-section cu-section--white ml-offset-center md:px-8 lg:px-14\">\n    <div class=\"space-y-6 cu-max-w-child-5xl  md:space-y-10 cu-prose-first-last\">\n\n            <div class=\"cu-textmedia flex flex-col lg:flex-row mx-auto gap-6 md:gap-10 my-6 md:my-12 first:mt-0 max-w-5xl\">\n        <div class=\"justify-start cu-textmedia-content cu-prose-first-last\" style=\"flex: 0 0 100%;\">\n            <header class=\"font-light prose-xl cu-pageheader md:prose-2xl cu-component-updated cu-prose-first-last\">\n                                    <h1 class=\"cu-prose-first-last font-semibold !mt-2 mb-4 md:mb-6 relative after:absolute after:h-px after:bottom-0 after:bg-cu-red after:left-px text-3xl md:text-4xl lg:text-5xl lg:leading-[3.5rem] pb-5 after:w-10 text-cu-black-700 not-prose\">\n                        Flavelle Medalist Credits Carleton\n                    <\/h1>\n                \n                                \n                            <\/header>\n\n                    <\/div>\n\n            <\/div>\n\n    <\/div>\n<\/section>\n\n<p>(Ottawa)&nbsp;\u2013 &nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/carleton.ca\/biology\/facultystaff-listing\/faculty\/ken-storey\/\">Kenneth Storey<\/a>, professor of Biology and Chemistry at Carleton and Canada Research Chair in Molecular Physiology, will be awarded the prestigious Flavelle Medal from the Royal Society of Canada on Saturday, Nov. 27, 2010.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Established in 1924, the Flavelle Medal is biennially awarded for an outstanding contribution to biological science during the preceding 10 years or for significant additions to a previous outstanding contribution to biological science.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Internationally recognized for his exploration of biochemical adaptation, Storey has been awarded for his discovery of the underlying biochemical principles that allow animals to make transitions to and from dormant states.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Upon learning of his award, Storey credited his success to Carleton. \u201cThis award is a reflection of the excellent team of students I have been privileged to supervise here at Carleton.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Storey\u2019s research focuses on the molecular mechanisms of gene, protein and enzyme regulation used by animals to achieve unique survival strategies, including freeze tolerance, life without oxygen, desiccation resistance and mammalian hibernation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He is an elected fellow of the Royal Society of Canada and the American Association for the Advancement of Science and has won fellowships and awards for research excellence, including the <a title=\"Ottawa Life Sciences Council (page does not exist)\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/w\/index.php?title=Ottawa_Life_Sciences_Council&amp;action=edit&amp;redlink=1\">Ottawa Life Sciences Council<\/a> Basic Research Award (1998), a <a title=\"Killam Senior Research Fellowship (page does not exist)\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/w\/index.php?title=Killam_Senior_Research_Fellowship&amp;action=edit&amp;redlink=1\">Killam Senior Research Fellowship<\/a> (1993-1995), the <a title=\"Ayerst Award (page does not exist)\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/w\/index.php?title=Ayerst_Award&amp;action=edit&amp;redlink=1\">Ayerst Award<\/a> from the <a title=\"Canadian Biochemical Society (page does not exist)\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/w\/index.php?title=Canadian_Biochemical_Society&amp;action=edit&amp;redlink=1\">Canadian Biochemical Society<\/a> (1989), an E.W.R.
