Toth"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2>RSVP FORM BELOW<\/h2>\n<p><\/p>\n<p>Zoom Link<br \/>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/carleton-ca.zoom.us\/j\/91644006531\">https:\/\/carleton-ca.zoom.us\/j\/91644006531<\/a><\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p><strong>Building a Superorganism: Integrative Insights into the Evolution and Regulation of Insect Sociality<\/strong><br \/>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.tothlab.org\/\">Dr. Amy L.Toth<\/a>, <em>Dept. of Ecology, Evolution, and Organismal Biology\/Dept. of Entomology, Iowa State University<\/em><\/p>\n<p class=\"xmsonormal\">The evolution of superorganisms, such as eusocial insect colonies composed of highly cooperative individuals working together as a single whole, has been described as a major transition in the history of life.\u00a0 The question of \u201c<u>why?\u201d<\/u>\u00a0has this extreme form of cooperation evolved has been of intense interest to biologists since Darwin.\u00a0 Now, armed with new tools and technologies, animal behaviorists have turned to ask \u201c<u>how\u201d<\/u>\u00a0has this revolutionary change in life history evolved? \u00a0Wasps and bees are excellent comparative study systems for addressing such questions, because they are extremely diverse taxonomically and socially; with multiple independent origins of sociality.\u00a0 Using an integrative approach that blends behavior, physiology, and genomics, our studies on bees and wasps are providing new insights into the mechanisms and evolution of cooperative societies.\u00a0 I will discuss some of these, including: 1) elements of maternal behavior and reproductive physiology becoming \u201cretooled\u201d by evolution for new social purposes, 2) the role of resource limitation and nutritional inequalities in the regulation of cooperative behaviors, 3) roles for both deeply conserved \u201ctoolkits\u201d as well as newly evolved genes in the evolution of social traits, and 4) how \u201cbeing social\u201d may feed back on how genomes evolve.\u00a0 These studies contribute to a developing picture of the molecular, organismal, and ecological processes that have enabled the evolution of biological complexity.<\/p>\n<h3><\/h3>\n<p><\/p>\n","protected":false},"template":"","meta":{"_relevanssi_hide_post":"","_relevanssi_hide_content":"","_relevanssi_pin_for_all":"","_relevanssi_pin_keywords":"","_relevanssi_unpin_keywords":"","_relevanssi_related_keywords":"","_relevanssi_related_include_ids":"","_relevanssi_related_exclude_ids":"","_relevanssi_related_no_append":"","_relevanssi_related_not_related":"","_relevanssi_related_posts":"","_relevanssi_noindex_reason":"","_mi_skip_tracking":false,"_exactmetrics_sitenote_active":false,"_exactmetrics_sitenote_note":"","_exactmetrics_sitenote_category":0,"_links_to":"","_links_to_target":""},"daevent-type":[],"event-audience":[],"event-featured":[],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v21.2 - https:\/\/yoast.com\/wordpress\/plugins\/seo\/ -->\n<title>Carmody Lecture 2021 with Dr. Amy L.
