{"id":5126,"date":"2016-10-07T16:30:31","date_gmt":"2016-10-07T20:30:31","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/biology\/?post_type=cu-people&#038;p=5126"},"modified":"2022-01-10T14:43:37","modified_gmt":"2022-01-10T19:43:37","slug":"richard-schuster","status":"publish","type":"cu-people","link":"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/biology\/people\/richard-schuster\/","title":{"rendered":"Richard Schuster"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2>Current Research<\/h2>\n<p><em>Using citizen science to help prevent the loss of North American bird species.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Problem:<\/span> One hundred years ago, the Migratory Bird Treaty helped shape North America\u2019s conservation ethic. This year\u2019s \u201cThe State of North America\u2019s Birds 2016\u201d report identified a third of the continent\u2019s bird species to be at high conservation risk. The most important threats to migratory birds today are loss and degradation of habitat and climate change. As a consequence, breeding bird populations have been reduced by 1.5 billion individuals since 1970. Today, we need new initiatives in Canada and North America for a sound environmental future.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Solution:<\/span> Use transformational citizen science projects, such as eBird, to optimize conservation strategies across entire ranges of migratory species, and identify portfolios of sites critical to the global persistence of these species. Facilitate better-informed and more cost-effective conservation programs to help prevent the extinction of migratory species.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Our contribution:<\/span> We are developing approaches to help pin-point where conservation actions should focus in the places where birds breed, overwinter and stop over during migration.
