The next Science Café will be presented by PhD Candidate Shannon Bower, from the Department of Biology.

In the age of social media and #CeciltheLion, more and more people are becoming aware of the role that extractive sectors (such as hunting and fishing) play in conservation of biodiversity and supporting local communities. Increasingly, there is a demand that people participating in these activities adopt best practices aimed at minimizing the impacts on individual animals and populations. Catch-and-release (C&R) fishing, where fish are returned to the water and presumed to be unharmed, is becoming popular in recreational fisheries worldwide, but not all species respond to C&R in the same way. Yet, C&R recreational fisheries are growing rapidly around the world and local communities often rely heavily on income from these fisheries. How can we maximize the benefits associated with C&R while minimizing potential impacts on target populations? This talk will offer a global view on recreational fishing issues through the case study of the mahseer (Tor spp.) recreational fishery of the magnificent Cauvery River in India.

All are welcome.
