Although the genetic basis of morphogenesis is relatively well characterized, it is still unclear how gene action translates into biological shapes.&nbsp;We try to answer this fundamental question by using a combination of genetic, confocal time-lapse imaging, 3D-image analysis, and computational modeling. As an example of this quantitative approach, I will present our recent results on leaf morphogenesis in two closely related species <em>Arabidopsis thaliana<\/em>, which has simple leaves with serrations, and&nbsp;<em>Cardamine hirsuta<\/em>&nbsp;with compound leaves subdivided into individual leaflets.
