More than 80 full time faculty and 50 adjunct professors supervise the research of approximately 350 graduate students at the Institute. The Institute has several major fields of research including: <em>Cellular and Molecular Biology<\/em>; <em>Animal Physiology and Biochemistry<\/em>; <em>Plant Sciences<\/em>; <em>Neurobiology and Behaviour, Genomics and Bioinformatics<\/em>; and, <em>Ecology, Evolution and Conservation.<\/em> The Institute also contributes to interdisciplinary specializations including Biotechnology, Environmental and Chemical Toxicology, Neuroscience, and Data Science.<\/p>\n<p>The Institute was formed in 1982 by the amalgamation of the graduate programs of Carleton University and the University of Ottawa. Because of its location in Canada&#8217;s capital, Institute scientists have the opportunity to collaborate with the many federal government research scientists in institutions including; the National Research Council, Agriculture Canada, Health Canada, National Museums, Environment Canada, and Atomic Energy of Canada.
