{"id":15305,"date":"2024-04-16T12:08:55","date_gmt":"2024-04-16T16:08:55","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/biology\/?p=15305"},"modified":"2024-04-16T12:13:36","modified_gmt":"2024-04-16T16:13:36","slug":"carleton-biology-grads-on-cbc","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/biology\/2024\/carleton-biology-grads-on-cbc\/","title":{"rendered":"Carleton Biology Students on CBC Radio!"},"content":{"rendered":"<h3 class=\"ule-pid-current-item-title\" style=\"text-align: center;\">What happens to crickets in space?<\/h3>\n<p><\/p>\n<div class=\"ule-pid-button-container\">\n<div class=\"playAllContainer ule-pid-play-button \">\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Our Biology Grads &amp; Undergrads: <strong>Emily McColville,<\/strong> <strong>Sophie Kasdorf,<\/strong> <strong>Hunter Brzezinski &amp; Cassandra Stabile<\/strong> working with <a href=\"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/biology\/people\/dr-sue-bertram\/\">Sue Bertram<\/a> &amp; <a href=\"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/biology\/people\/heath-macmillan\/\">Heath MacMillan<\/a> were featured on CBC radio for their outstanding research on crickets.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Their team is sending crickets at different life stages on Canada&#8217;s Falcon 20 aircraft, which will fly in parabolas to simulate microgravity. They&#8217;ll be held in a secure case that&#8217;s regulated for temperature. The\u00a0team is looking at &#8220;several different factors&#8221; from the flight, notably whether the crickets survive and if their age affects their likelihood of making it back alive.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">According to <strong>Sophie Kasdorf,<\/strong> a mission specialist with Team Insecta, crickets could be suitable for space travel because they can be raised in a small space with limited resources.
