We will discuss aspects of food systems, including production, distribution, consumption, waste management, and their impact on communities and the environment.<\/p>\n<p>Includes: Experiential Learning Activity<br \/>\nPrerequisite(s): third year standing or permission of the Institute.<br \/>\nLecture three hours per week.<\/p>\n<p><em>Fall term course with Dr. Rachel Buxton.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong>ISAP 3001 [0.5 credit]<br \/>\nApplied Data Analysis<\/strong><br \/>\nData analysis strategies to tackle real-world, wicked problems. Includes a hands-on applied environmental data science project with a variety of partners. Topics include: obtaining and working with data, exploring causal relationships, data ethics, communicating data, and moving from data to information to action.<\/p>\n<p>Includes: Experiential Learning Activity<br \/>\nAlso listed as\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/calendar.carleton.ca\/search\/?P=ISAP%203001\">ISAP\u00a03001<\/a>.<br \/>\nPrerequisite(s):\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/calendar.carleton.ca\/search\/?P=STAT%202507\">STAT\u00a02507<\/a>.<br \/>\nLecture three hours per week.<\/p>\n<p><em>Winter term course with Dr. Steven Cooke<\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong>ISAP\u00a03003\u00a0[0.5 credit]<br \/>\nScience Communication<\/strong><br \/>\nHow is science perceived and how has science been communicated? Students will use case studies to assess examples of science communication with varying outcomes. Topics include the principles of effective science communication, the range of tools available, and knowing the audience.<\/p>\n<p>Includes: Experiential Learning Activity<br \/>\nPrerequisite(s): Third year standing.<br \/>\nLecture three hours per week.<\/p>\n<p><em>Winter term course with Dr. Joe Bennett<\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong>ENSC\u00a04002\u00a0[0.5 credit]<br \/>\nEnvironmental Decisions<\/strong><br \/>\nThe regulatory and scientific aspects of environmental management decisions, including risk analysis and mitigation, managing chronic and acute environmental impacts, and conservation of species and landscapes. Students will use real-world case studies to learn traditional and cutting-edge decision-making tools.<\/p>\n<p>Includes: Experiential Learning Activity<br \/>\nPrerequisite(s): third-year standing in any B.Sc. program or permission of the Institute.<br \/>\nWorkshops three hours per week.<\/p>\n<p><em>Winter term course with Dr. Elliot Skierszkan.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong>ENSC4700 [0.5 credit]<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Environmental Isotopes<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Isotope applications in environmental and Earth sciences. Emphasis is placed current and novel environmental applications including contaminant tracing, hydrogeological studies, and (bio)geochemical cycling of elements. Mechanisms of stable isotope fractionation and analysis are presented.
