Carleton University has announced a new collaborative Master\u2019s in Data Science<\/a> geared at graduate students and high-tech professionals who are interested in understanding how to analyze and use \u201cbig data\u201d sets collected by governments, industry, non-governmental organizations and others.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Increasingly, these data are being used for purposes such as improving the efficiency of health-care delivery, predicting national security threats or generating personal recommendations for online shopping.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cCarleton has a strong relationship with Ottawa\u2019s tech sector,\u201d said Frank Dehne, Chancellor\u2019s Professor in Carleton\u2019s School of Computer Science. \u201cWorking with these businesses and other partners, Carleton is poised to become a national hub for data science research and training, educating a highly skilled workforce for local, national and international communities and creating the next generation of IT leaders.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Students will earn their degree in one of six academic disciplines at Carleton with a specialization in data science or an MBA concentration in business analytics through research or coursework that addresses a data science challenge.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

At Carleton, more than 130 researchers are working on projects involving big data. Examples include:
\n\u2022 DNA and molecular modelling data
\n\u2022 Data from the Confederation Bridge
\n\u2022 Cloud computing
\n\u2022 Information retrieval and web information access
\n\u2022 Natural language processing
\n\u2022 Artificial intelligence
\n\u2022 Database and information integration.
\n\u2022 Business analytics in marketing, finance, human resources, and operations
\n\u2022 Sensor data analytics
\n\u2022 Patient monitoring<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The collaborative program launches this week. Applications are being accepted until Oct. 31, 2014. The program is open to students who are already enrolled in one of the participating Carleton master\u2019s programs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Participating programs include Biology; Biomedical Engineering; Business; Computer Science; Economics; Electrical and Computer Engineering; and Geography. Several of these programs are part of the joint institutes with the University of Ottawa.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Carleton is positioning itself as a leader in Data Science and this announcement is one more in a list of achievements in the field.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

During Data Day in spring 2014, Carleton celebrated its strategic development in Data Science and held a discussion between national experts, academic leaders and community members about the possibilities and potential of the area.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
