{"id":8425,"date":"2019-12-02T10:27:59","date_gmt":"2019-12-02T15:27:59","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/biology\/?p=8425"},"modified":"2019-12-02T10:27:59","modified_gmt":"2019-12-02T15:27:59","slug":"the-real-world-biotech-internship-challenges-carleton-students","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/biology\/2019\/the-real-world-biotech-internship-challenges-carleton-students\/","title":{"rendered":"The Real World: Biotech Internship Challenges Carleton Students"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>For the second year, the <a href=\"https:\/\/nrc.canada.ca\/en\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">National Research Council<\/a> (NRC), the Government of Canada\u2019s largest research organization, welcomed 25 undergraduate science students from Carleton University (CU) to its active Ottawa research facility during October\u2019s fall break to expose them to how scientists work.<\/p>\n<p>NRC researchers Sue Twine and Kelly Fulton from the <a href=\"https:\/\/nrc.canada.ca\/en\/research-development\/research-collaboration\/research-centres\/human-health-therapeutics-research-centre\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Human Health Therapeutics Research Centre<\/a> teamed up with Bill Willmore and Martha Mullally from Carleton University to offer students a unique experiential learning program that provides opportunities to meet entrepreneurs, business developers and top scientists in the biotechnology field.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/biology\/people\/bill-willmore\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Biochemistry Prof. Bill Willmore<\/a> says students in biotechnology, biochemistry and biology programs applied for the <a href=\"https:\/\/newsroom.carleton.ca\/2018\/first-nrc-cu-biotech-internship\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">NRC-CU Biotech Internship<\/a> and spent the week learning about business development, intellectual property management, entrepreneurship, career management, marketing, bio-manufacturing, drug design and cancer therapeutic development.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-8426 alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/biology\/wp-content\/uploads\/NRC-biotech-students-1200x680-240x136.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"240\" height=\"136\" srcset=\"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/biology\/wp-content\/uploads\/NRC-biotech-students-1200x680-240x136.jpg 240w, https:\/\/carleton.ca\/biology\/wp-content\/uploads\/NRC-biotech-students-1200x680-160x91.jpg 160w, https:\/\/carleton.ca\/biology\/wp-content\/uploads\/NRC-biotech-students-1200x680-768x435.jpg 768w, https:\/\/carleton.ca\/biology\/wp-content\/uploads\/NRC-biotech-students-1200x680-400x227.jpg 400w, https:\/\/carleton.ca\/biology\/wp-content\/uploads\/NRC-biotech-students-1200x680-360x204.jpg 360w, https:\/\/carleton.ca\/biology\/wp-content\/uploads\/NRC-biotech-students-1200x680.jpg 1200w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 240px) 100vw, 240px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Students worked in small teams to launch hypothetical cancer biotech startup companies, choosing company names and assigning themselves roles.
