The Carleton University Board of Governors met on March 12, 2020. Minutes from the meeting will be posted on the Board of Governors website once available. The following are highlights:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Presentation by KPMG\u2019s Andrew Newman<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The Board welcomed Andrew Newman, the leader of KPMG\u2019s Public Sector Audit Practice in Ottawa, to discuss trends in higher education and the public sector.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

New Residence Construction to Begin Spring 2020<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

An update was provided on the new student residence building project that was approved by the Board in September 2019. The project is now at 100-per-cent design completion and can proceed with the detailed implementation. The new 452-bed residence will be located at the north section of campus within the existing residence precinct and will face the main campus entrance on University Drive toward Bronson Avenue. Construction is expected to commence in spring 2020, with occupancy in September 2022.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Tuition Fees Approved<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The Board approved the university\u2019s 2020\/21 tuition fees. In line with Ontario\u2019s Tuition Fee Framework for colleges and universities, all domestic tuition fees were reduced by 10 per cent in 2019 and will be frozen next year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ancillary Budget Approved<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The Board approved the 2020\/21 Ancillary Budget. This includes Physical Recreation and Athletics, the Bookstore, Health and Counselling Services, Housing & Residence Life, Conference Services, Dining Services, Parking Services, the University Centre, the Print Shop, and the Carleton Dominion-Chalmers Centre. The Ancillary Budget outlined a total revenue of $71.6M, operating expenses of $46.7M and $23.2M for renovations\/debt reductions, leaving a small surplus of $1.7M.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Draft Strategic Integrated Plan Presented<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The draft Strategic Integrated Plan was distributed and reviewed by the Board. The Board of Governors\u2019 feedback was solicited on the draft. Community members are encouraged to review and provide feedback on the draft, which is available on Carleton\u2019s website<\/a>.  The Strategic Integrated Plan will return to the Board on June 2, 2020 for approval.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Sexual Violence Prevention Strategy<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

As part of the Sexual Violence Policy review process, Carleton made a commitment to capture actionable tactics to reduce sexual violence on campus as a separate document, referred to as the Campus Prevention Strategy for Sexual Violence. Titled Honouring Each Other<\/em><\/a>, the strategy intends to provide a three-year map of activities that Carleton members can initiate, engage in or help bring to life to play their part in making a safer campus for everyone. The Board also received the 2019 Annual Report on Sexual Violence, which reports that more than 5,200 members of the community received training in 2019 to increase awareness and prevention techniques to limit sexual violence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Recognize an Outstanding Student for Community Volunteerism<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Nominations are now open for the Carleton University Board of Governors Award for Outstanding Community Achievement. This $2,000 financial award recognizes the spirit of student volunteerism and substantial community contribution while at Carleton University. Governor Spotlight: Jonathan Malloy<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The Board of Governors consists of 32 volunteers representing the Carleton community, like Carleton Prof. Jonathan Malloy. Elected to the Board in 2018 as an academic staff representative, Jonathan is the Honourable Dick and Ruth Bell Chair in Canadian Parliamentary Democracy and a professor in the Department of Political Science. Learn more about Jonathan<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
