However, students are also able to change their notification preferences and disable the email notification if desired.<\/p>\n<div class=\"columns\"><div class=\"columns__two\"><div style=\"width: 115%; height: 100%; background-color: #f7e4e7; border: 1px; border-style: solid; border-color: #e08290; padding: 12px 12px 1px;\">\n<p><strong>WARNING:<\/strong> Course Announcements are not emailed out to students before the course start date, nor after the course end date. However, instructors can adjust the default start and end dates for their Brightspace courses in the Course Offering information page to allow for announcements outside of the set dates.<\/p>\n<p>***All correspondence after the last day of classes should be made by Classlist email function. If you wish to make announcements after the last day of classes, you will need to update your classes end-of-date setting.***<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n<div class=\"columns__two\"><\/div><\/div>\n<p>For information about editing course start and end dates, visit the <a href=\"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/brightspace\/instructors\/changing-course-start-and-end-dates\/\">Changing Course Start and End Dates<\/a> support page.<\/p>\n<h2>Benefits of Using the Announcements Tool Over Email<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>Create your presence in the course with regular, consistent announcement scheduling<\/li>\n<li>Pre-write and pre-schedule announcements so that they release at specific times ahead of important course deliverables<\/li>\n<li>Copy announcements between courses and update them for continued use, ** Ensure that your announcements do not contain any identifying information for students.<\/li>\n<li>Add multi-media, such as videos, images, and links to news events\/articles<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>Recommendations<\/h2>\n<h3>Announcements Tool<\/h3>\n<ul type=\"disc\">\n<li>For weekly course messaging, use announcements since they will save a history and are available for students who enroll later. These messages should be at scheduled days of the week and times so that students know when to check.<\/li>\n<li>Explain the importance of announcements and what information students will get from them. Encourage students to have notifications on for announcements or to at least check the course announcements regularly (emailing at consistent times\/days will help them know when to check).<\/li>\n<li>Do not send so many announcements and emails that students turn notifications off or ignore your messages.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>Email<\/h3>\n<ul type=\"disc\">\n<li>Use Email from the Classlist to communicate with students before the course start date. Emailing will ensure students see your message before the course is active (include in this email why they cannot see the course yet).<\/li>\n<li>Use email for urgent messaging (e.g., Zoom link is changed, office hours today are cancelled). Email ensure students get the information quickly even if they are not in Brightspace and have notifications off.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>Are Students Notified About Course Announcements via Email?<\/h3>\n<p>By default, students will receive email notifications when a course announcement is made. It is important to note that students have the ability to unsubscribe to announcements, as well as subscribe to many other course-related notifications. The<strong> Send Email Copy checkbox<\/strong> at the bottom of the announcement editor allows you to override student notification settings.<\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-9417\" src=\"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/brightspace\/instructors\/wp-content\/uploads\/Send-Email-Copy.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"423\" height=\"389\" srcset=\"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/brightspace\/instructors\/wp-content\/uploads\/Send-Email-Copy.png 824w, https:\/\/carleton.ca\/brightspace\/instructors\/wp-content\/uploads\/Send-Email-Copy-240x220.png 240w, https:\/\/carleton.ca\/brightspace\/instructors\/wp-content\/uploads\/Send-Email-Copy-400x367.png 400w, https:\/\/carleton.ca\/brightspace\/instructors\/wp-content\/uploads\/Send-Email-Copy-160x147.png 160w, https:\/\/carleton.ca\/brightspace\/instructors\/wp-content\/uploads\/Send-Email-Copy-768x706.png 768w, https:\/\/carleton.ca\/brightspace\/instructors\/wp-content\/uploads\/Send-Email-Copy-360x331.png 360w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 423px) 100vw, 423px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>When selected, a copy of the announcement will be emailed to all\u00a0users\u00a0in the\u00a0classlist\u00a0<b>including those who have opted out of announcement notifications<\/b>\u00a0upon publishing.<br \/>\nThis\u00a0option\u00a0will be automatically deselected when an announcement is copied or\u00a0edited, and\u00a0must be selected again before republishing.<\/p>\n<h2>Creating an Announcement<\/h2>\n<ol>\n<li>Sign into <a href=\"https:\/\/brightspace.carleton.ca\/\">Brightspace<\/a>\u00a0with your <em>MyCarletonOne<\/em> credentials.<\/li>\n<li>On the\u00a0<em>Brightspace<\/em>\u00a0homepage, locate your course in one of the following ways:\n<ul style=\"list-style-type: circle;\">\n<li>Select the course tile under the <em>My Courses\u00a0<\/em>widget.<\/li>\n<li>Select the <b>Course Selector Grid\u00a0<\/b><i><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/culearnsupport\/students\/wp-content\/uploads\/Screen-Shot-2020-11-02-at-8.15.40-PM.png\" width=\"22\" height=\"20\" data-imagetype=\"External\" \/>\u00a0<\/i>and select the course from the drop-down menu.
