Groups <span data-contrast=\"auto\">allow students to work collaboratively on projects\/assignments and to share files. Students can belong to multiple groups within a course and can see all the same content that other learners in the course see. Group members are also visible to all members of the same group. There is no way to make group membership private or confidential in D2L Brightspace. <a href=\"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/brightspace\/instructors\/setting-accommodations-in-brightspace\/\">To set up PMC Accommodations, use the Classlist, not groups.<\/a>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>What Are the Benefits of Setting Up Groups?<\/h2>\n<p>Setting up groups allows for additional functionality in the course such as:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li data-leveltext=\"\uf0b7\" data-font=\"Symbol\" data-listid=\"44\" aria-setsize=\"-1\" data-aria-posinset=\"1\" data-aria-level=\"1\"><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Assigning TAs to different clusters of students<\/span><\/li>\n<li data-leveltext=\"\uf0b7\" data-font=\"Symbol\" data-listid=\"44\" aria-setsize=\"-1\" data-aria-posinset=\"2\" data-aria-level=\"1\"><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Sharing work spaces, such as Discussions and Group Lockers in smaller clusters of students<\/span><\/li>\n<li data-leveltext=\"\uf0b7\" data-font=\"Symbol\" data-listid=\"44\" aria-setsize=\"-1\" data-aria-posinset=\"3\" data-aria-level=\"1\">Releasing content to specific groups within the course<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/documentation.brightspace.com\/EN\/le\/groups\/instructor\/best_practices_for_setting_up_groups.htm?tocpath=Instructors%7CInteract%20and%20engage%20with%20learners%7CCreate%20group%20work%20areas%20for%20learners%7C_____1\">\u2192Best Practices for Setting Up Groups<\/a><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\"><strong>NOTE:<\/strong> By default, students can access groups via the Tools menu in a Brightspace course. Instructors have the option to remove student access by deleting the Groups link from the Tools menu in the course navbar. For more information, see <a href=\"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/brightspace\/instructors\/wp-content\/uploads\/Understanding-Brightspace-Navbars.pdf\">Understanding Brightspace Navbars<\/a>. To submit a support request, visit the <a href=\"https:\/\/itsjira.carleton.ca\/servicedesk\/customer\/portal\/15\">TLS Support Portal<\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>Creating Groups<\/h2>\n<p>You can use categories to organize and manage related groups in your course. For example, you can have a category for Assignment 1, Assignment 2, Seminars, etc.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"#create1\">Create a Group Category\u00a0<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"#add1\">Assign Students or TAs to a Group<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"#change1\">Change Group or Category Names<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"#group1\">Add a Group to a Category<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<table style=\"height: 48px; width: 100%; border-collapse: collapse; border-style: solid; border-color: #bababa;\" border=\"1\">\n<tbody>\n<tr style=\"height: 24px;\">\n<td style=\"width: 100%; background-color: #f5f5f5; height: 24px; border-style: solid; border-color: #dcdcdd;\"><strong>NOTE: <\/strong>Groups have a <strong>maximum enrollment of 200 users<\/strong>. See a description of the enrolment type options in the <a href=\"#enroll1\">table below<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li data-leveltext=\"%1.\" data-font=\"\" data-listid=\"34\" aria-setsize=\"-1\" data-aria-posinset=\"1\" data-aria-level=\"1\">Enter the number of groups to create and\/or the number of students per group.<\/li>\n<li data-leveltext=\"%1.\" data-font=\"\" data-listid=\"34\" aria-setsize=\"-1\" data-aria-posinset=\"1\" data-aria-level=\"1\">To apply a distinctive prefix to each group name and code in the category, enter it in the\u00a0<span class=\"uicontrol\">Group Prefix\u00a0<\/span>field. More groups are created when they are needed to accommodate users. In the Members column of the Groups table, capacity markers display in the form x\/y, where x is the number of enrolled students and y is the capacity.<\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p><strong>When to use:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Use this enrollment type when you know how many users you want in each group. Select this option when you have assignments that require work to be divided between a specific number of users, or when you can only accommodate a set number of users in a lab or work area at one time.<\/li>\n<li>If you also enable the\u00a0<strong>Auto-enroll new users<\/strong>\u00a0option and all of the existing groups reach their maximum size, new users are added to a new group. Because there is no way to know how many new users will join, all new users are added to the same group until it is full.<\/li>\n<li>If users are enrolled after groups are set up, users are added to groups using a bucket-filling algorithm because there is no way for the system to determine how many groups in total are needed. For example, if a maximum group size of 5 users is chosen for a class in which 23 users eventually enroll, the first five users are added to Group 1, the sixth through tenth user to Group 2, and so on. After 23 users are enrolled, groups 1-4 have 5 users and Group 5 has 3 users.<\/li>\n<li>If the\u00a0<strong>Can be auto enrolled into groups<\/strong>\u00a0option is cleared, the minimum number of groups needed to create groups under the specified size are created with no users enrolled in them. If no users are enrolled in the course, one group is created.
