Instructors can create groups of students in D2L Brightspace to use for group assignments, discussion groups and more. It is possible that a student can be in more than one group in a course. Students can be placed randomly in a group, or may be able to select their own.<\/p>\n

Lockers provide online file storage within Brightspace. Groups may have a shared locker where files can be uploaded and shared with group members and the instructor. While each student has a personal locker, it is not recommended to use this as a personal file management, as it is limited to 10MB of content and is only accessible through the groups tool.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
NOTE:\u00a0<\/strong>While lockers are a good place to share files with group members, it is recommended to use OneDrive<\/a> for any collaborative document or live-editing needs.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n

Viewing Groups<\/h2>\n
    \n
  1. Log into Brightspace<\/a> with your MyCarletonOne<\/em> username and password.<\/li>\n
  2. Select your course under My Courses<\/em>\u00a0or the\u00a0course selector grid\u00a0\"\"<\/em><\/li>\n
  3. Select Tools<\/strong> in the course navbar.

  4. Select Groups<\/strong>. This will take you to a list of the groups you are a member of for the present course.<\/li>\n
  5. Select the number in the Members column to view all group members.

  6. Select the email icon \"email<\/strong> in the Email column to send an email to the group.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

    Self-Enroll in a Group<\/h2>\n

    If an instructor has enabled group self-selection, students will need to sign up for a group of their choosing. These groups will have likely restrictions on how many students can join.\u00a0 <\/em><\/p>\n

    1. Select Tools <\/strong>in the course navbar.

    2. Select Groups<\/strong>.<\/li>\n
    3. Select View Available Groups<\/strong>.<\/li>\n
    4. Review the groups currently available. If other students have enrolled in a group, select the number in the Members<\/strong> column to see the list of students currently enrolled.<\/li>\n
    5. Select Join Group<\/strong> to join a group.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

      You are now a member of the group.<\/em><\/p>\n

      Using a Group Locker<\/h2>\n
        \n
      1. Select Tools <\/strong>in the navbar.

      3. Select Group Files<\/strong> under the Locker column to open a group locker.
        \n\n\n\n
        NOTE:\u00a0<\/strong>If you do not see Group Files listed in the Locker column, there is no locker for this group.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<\/li>\n
      4. Any files uploaded to the locker will be listed on this page.<\/li>\n
      5. Select a file name to open the file.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

        To Upload a File<\/strong><\/h3>\n
          \n
        1. Select Tools <\/strong>in the navbar.

        2. Select Groups<\/strong>.<\/li>\n
        3. Select Group Files<\/strong> under the Locker<\/em> column to open a group locker.<\/li>\n
        4. Select Upload Files<\/strong>.<\/li>\n
        5. Select Upload<\/strong>.<\/li>\n
        6. Select the file to upload from your computer.\u00a0<\/em><\/strong>
          \n\n\n\n
          TIP:\u00a0<\/strong>Ensure the file has a descriptive name to identify it. Add any additional information in the Description box. The description will display under the file name in the locker.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<\/li>\n
        7. Select Save<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

          The file is now uploaded and is accessible to all group members.<\/em><\/p>\n

          To Create a File<\/strong><\/h3>\n

          Create a simple word file directly in a group locker.<\/em><\/p>\n

          1. Select Tools <\/strong>in the navbar.

          2. Select Groups<\/strong>.<\/li>\n
          3. Select Group Files<\/strong> under the Locker<\/em> column to open a group locker.

          4. Select New File<\/strong>.<\/li>\n
          5. Type a descriptive file name.<\/li>\n
          6. Type the file text. Use the HTML editor to add any formatting, photos, videos or text styles.<\/li>\n
          7. Select Save<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

            The file is now created and will be accessible to all group members.<\/em><\/p>\n

            To Organize a Locker Using Folders<\/strong><\/h3>\n

            Organize the files in a locker by creating folders. <\/em><\/p>\n

              \n
            1. Select Tools <\/strong>in the navbar.

            2. Select Groups<\/strong>.<\/li>\n
            3. Select Group Files<\/strong> under the Locker column to open a group locker.

            4. Select New Folder<\/strong>.<\/li>\n
            5. Type a descriptive folder name.<\/li>\n
            6. Select Create<\/strong>.<\/li>\n
            7. Select the files to add to the new folder by clicking the selection box beside the file name.<\/li>\n
            8. Select Move<\/strong>.<\/li>\n
            9. Select the folder name to move them to.<\/li>\n
            10. Select Move<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

              The files will now be saved in a folder. Create multiple files to further organize the locker.<\/em><\/p>\n

              Emailing Groups<\/h2>\n

              1. Log into Brightspace<\/a> with your MyCarletonOne<\/em> username and password.<\/li>\n
              2. Select your course under My Courses<\/em>\u00a0or the\u00a0course selector grid\u00a0\"\"<\/em><\/li>\n
              3. Select Tools <\/strong>in the navbar.

              4. Select Groups <\/strong>from the drop-down menu. You will be taken to the Groups tool.<\/li>\n
              5. Select the email icon \"email<\/strong> in the Email<\/em> column to send an email to the group.<\/li>\n
              6. A\u00a0Compose New Message<\/em> window will open. If you want to email specific group members, you can remove or add email addresses in the BCC<\/em> field.<\/li>\n
              7. Compose and format your message in the\u00a0Body<\/em>\u00a0field<\/li>\n
              8. Under\u00a0Attachments<\/em>, you can add an attachment to your email in the following ways:\n

                • Select Upload<\/strong>\u00a0to select a file from your computer.<\/li>\n
                • Select Record<\/strong>\u00a0to create an audio or video recording within Brightspace.<\/li>\n
                • Select Choose Existing<\/strong>\u00a0to select a file that your have already uploaded and saved to your Brightspace course.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n
