Carleton\u2019s\u00a0<\/span>L<\/span>earning\u00a0<\/span>M<\/span>anagement\u00a0<\/span>S<\/span>ystem\u00a0<\/span>(LMS)\u00a0<\/span>is changing in May 2021.\u00a0<\/span>Starting May 1, all courses will be offered on\u00a0<\/span>Brightspace<\/span>\u00a0by D2L<\/span><\/a>.<\/span>\u00a0Here are\u00a0<\/span>five<\/span>\u00a0things\u00a0<\/span>instructors<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>need to know about migrating\u00a0<\/span>existing<\/span>\u00a0course content from\u00a0<\/span>cuLearn<\/span>\u00a0to\u00a0<\/span>the new LMS ahead of\u00a0<\/span>campus-wide\u00a0<\/span>access to Brightspace<\/span>\u00a0on Feb. 16<\/span>.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

1. Most <\/span><\/b>cuLearn<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/b>c<\/span><\/b>ontent\u00a0<\/span><\/b>w<\/span><\/b>ill\u00a0<\/span><\/b>b<\/span><\/b>e<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/b>m<\/span><\/b>igrated for\u00a0<\/span><\/b>instructors<\/span><\/b><\/h3>\n

ITS is working with\u00a0<\/span>D2L<\/span>\u00a0to migrate\u00a0<\/span>five<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>years\u2019 worth<\/span>\u00a0of\u00a0<\/span>cuLearn<\/span>\u00a0course content to\u00a0<\/span>Brightspace<\/span><\/a>\u00a0by June 1.\u00a0<\/span>If<\/span>\u00a0you\u2019ve taught in the past\u00a0<\/span>five<\/span>\u00a0years using\u00a0<\/span>cuLearn<\/span>, your content will be migrated for you<\/span>\u00a0and available\u00a0<\/span>for review\u00a0<\/span>in Brightspace.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>As of today,\u00a0<\/span>more than three<\/span>\u00a0years of content has already been transferred.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Your\u00a0<\/span>cuLearn<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>content will be available as a backup course\u00a0<\/span>in Brightspace\u00a0<\/span>for you to access and review.\u00a0<\/span>Many basic activities and course resources migrate smoothly to Brightspace, while some do not. We recommend reviewing your migrated content to see if it makes sense to revise what\u2019s there or to start fresh in the new LMS.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

If you<\/span>\u2019d like to use\u00a0<\/span>your existing<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>content, you will need to import the course components from the backup Brightspace course into your new\u00a0<\/span>Brightspace\u00a0<\/span>course. You can find\u00a0<\/span>instructions for copying course content\u00a0<\/span>on\u00a0our\u00a0<\/span>Instructor<\/span>\u00a0Support\u00a0<\/span>s<\/span>ite<\/span><\/a>.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

If you\u2019d like help reviewing your migrated content, please reach out to\u00a0<\/span>T<\/span>eaching and\u00a0<\/span>L<\/span>earning\u00a0<\/span>S<\/span>ervices\u00a0<\/span>(TLS)\u00a0<\/span>for support<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>by filling\u00a0<\/span>out\u00a0our\u00a0<\/span>course con<\/span>s<\/span>ul<\/span>t<\/span>ati<\/span>o<\/span>n re<\/span>q<\/span>uest form.<\/span><\/a><\/p>\n

2. Instructor s<\/span><\/b>upport is\u00a0<\/span><\/b>a<\/span><\/b>vailable for\u00a0<\/span><\/b>m<\/span><\/b>igrated\u00a0<\/span><\/b>c<\/span><\/b>ontent<\/span><\/b><\/h3>\n

A new\u00a0<\/span>LMS<\/span>\u00a0offers an excellent opportunity to rethink your teaching and learning. In some cases, it may make sense to start fresh in your course and\u00a0<\/span>to\u00a0<\/span>bring in selected content, rather than trying to<\/span>\u00a0reuse and<\/span>\u00a0rebuild\u00a0<\/span>all\u00a0<\/span>older content. To\u00a0<\/span>help\u00a0<\/span>you with your course development, TLS has created a\u00a0<\/span>cuLearn<\/span>\u00a0(Moodle) to Brightspace Tool Crosswalk<\/span><\/a>. Check out this page to see\u00a0<\/span>tool equivalencies, common issues and solutions to migration challenges.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span>Many basic activities and course resources migrate smoothly to Brightspace without issue. Some course elements do not.\u00a0<\/span>Plan to review your migrated content and decide\u00a0<\/span>whether<\/span>\u00a0it makes sense to use some, all or none of\u00a0<\/span>it in the new system<\/span>.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Remember, TLS staff are available to help you find solutions to your course needs. If your course activities and content don\u2019t migrate well,\u00a0<\/span>reach out\u00a0<\/span>t<\/span>o<\/span>\u00a0us<\/span><\/a>\u00a0to<\/span> find alternatives.<\/span><\/p>\n

3. cuLearn<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/b>a<\/span><\/b>ccess\u00a0<\/span><\/b>w<\/span><\/b>ill\u00a0<\/span><\/b>c<\/span><\/b>ontinue\u00a0<\/span><\/b>t<\/span><\/b>hroughout 2021<\/span><\/b><\/h3>\n

<\/b>Instructors, students and staff will be able to access\u00a0<\/span>data, content and files from\u00a0<\/span>cuLearn<\/span>\u00a0throughout\u00a0<\/span>the s<\/span>ummer and\u00a0<\/span>f<\/span>all\u00a0<\/span>terms<\/span>. Access to\u00a0<\/span>cuLearn<\/span>\u00a0will continue through the regular\u00a0<\/span>cuLearn<\/span>\u00a0login portal<\/span><\/a>\u00a0using your MC1 credentials.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

While you will still be able to access content and information, no new users or courses will be added to\u00a0<\/span>cuLearn<\/span>\u00a0past May 2021. Beginning May 1, all courses will be offered in\u00a0<\/span>Brightspace.<\/span><\/a>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

4. Migrated content should be reviewed and may need clean up<\/span><\/b><\/h3>\n

TLS is here to support you no matter what your course plans are. If you decide to fully migrate and revise your content, we can help you with a consultation. Perhaps you\u2019d like to import some older course elements, but not all. We\u2019d be happy to answer any questions you have. You might want to start fresh and explore the interface from a new perspective. Brightspace has new integrations and functionality that weren\u2019t available in\u00a0<\/span>cuLearn<\/span>. Regardless of your course setup approach, we\u2019re here to answer your questions.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

If you are thinking of using your migrated content, we recommend that you review the \u201cbackup-<\/span> moodle2-\u2026\u201d course in Brightspace which contains your\u00a0<\/span>cuLearn<\/span>\u00a0content.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

You\u2019ll notice the migrated content looks different and some course elements don\u2019t migrate well.<\/span> \u00a0You\u2019ll want to review the content to see what has come across, how it looks, and what is\u00a0<\/span> missing. Use the\u00a0<\/span>cuLearn (Moodle) to Brightspace Tool Crosswalk<\/span><\/a>\u00a0support page to guide your\u00a0<\/span> review.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Prior to copying the\u00a0<\/span>cuLearn<\/span>\u00a0content to your Brightspace course, clean up the content by\u00a0<\/span> removing redundancies and broken links.\u00a0 If you want assistance with reviewing your content,\u00a0<\/span> please complete the\u00a0<\/span>Course Consultation Request Form<\/span><\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n

5. Training is available<\/span><\/b><\/h3>\n

Brightspace Basics workshops will be ongoing throughout\u00a0<\/span>s<\/span>pring and\u00a0<\/span>s<\/span>ummer 2021. Exploring the Brightspace interface in training will allow you to better understand your migrated content.\u00a0<\/span>Y<\/span>ou\u2019ll see technical demonstrations, hear about available resources and get answers to your\u00a0<\/span>course\u00a0<\/span>questions. You will learn the new LMS and have a better sense of where to get started with your course design. In addition to Brightspace Basics work<\/span>s<\/span>hops, TLS will be expanding workshop offerings to include\u00a0<\/span>i<\/span>ntermediate\/<\/span>a<\/span>dvanced<\/span>\u00a0training sessions<\/span>\u00a0as well. Check the\u00a0<\/span>TLS events<\/span><\/a>\u00a0page<\/span>\u00a0regularly<\/span>\u00a0and sign up for a session.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

If the training topic you\u2019re looking for isn\u2019t listed yet, try visiting the\u00a0<\/span>Brightspace Video Tutorial YouTub<\/span>e channel<\/span><\/a>\u00a0for helpful videos on most topics.\u00a0<\/span>Remember, some navbars and menus in\u00a0<\/span>the\u00a0<\/span>tutorial videos may not be the same as Carleton\u2019s menus and navbars.
