Specifically, we are interested in how children learn the connections between concrete quantities (e.g., *** or three bowls or five fingers) and abstract numbers (i.e., spoken number words, written words, or written digits).<\/p>\n<p><strong>Who can participate? <\/strong>If your child is going to enter <strong>Grade 1, Grade 2, or Grade 3 in the fall (5- to 8-year-olds) and speaks English.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><strong>Where? <\/strong>The study can be take place at <u>one<\/u> of the following:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.google.ca\/maps\/place\/VSIM+(Visualization,+Simulation+and+Modeling)\/@45.380532,-75.7023887,17z\/data=!3m1!4b1!4m5!3m4!1s0x4cce0676c4570021:0x6c968b17d1b20924!8m2!3d45.380532!4d-75.7002\">Math Cognition Lab at VSIM 5210 Carleton University<\/a><\/li>\n<li>A quiet space in a library, or community center<\/li>\n<li>Your home at your convenience<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>What are the tasks? <\/strong>We will visit you and your child for about 30 minutes. Children will be asked to play fun games with a researcher that measures their understanding of numbers and cognitive skills on an iPad or using paper-and-pencil (e.g., Can you find where number 30 goes on this number line? Or can you touch the \u201cblack\u201d button when you hear the word \u201cwhite?\u201d).<\/p>\n<p>Meantime, we will kindly ask you complete three short arithmetic measures and a brief parent questionnaire (less than 20 minutes).<\/p>\n<p><strong>How long?<\/strong> 30 minutes.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Compensation?<\/strong> You will be given a $10 gift card and your child will be given stickers and a participation award certificate at the end of the session. After the research is complete we will send you a summary report of our findings and also offer you some tips on how to support your child\u2019s mathematical development.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Results? <\/strong>Reports stemming from this research can be shared with interested parents without disclosing individuals\u2019 performance.
