In 2023, the School launched the <a href=\"https:\/\/calendar.carleton.ca\/grad\/gradprograms\/canadianstudies\/#MA_Canadian_Studies__with_Concentration_in_Heritage_Planning_and_Studies\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">MA in Canadian Studies with Concentration in Heritage Planning and Studies.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>The programme has a strong focus on local community heritage and engages regularly with government agencies, professionals in private practice, and advocacy groups, with guest speakers playing important roles in presenting students with the diversity of stakeholders and rightsholders involved. The <a href=\"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/canadianstudies\/heritage-conservation\/heritage-conservation-symposium-archive\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">annual heritage conservation symposium<\/a> provides graduate students with opportunities to connect critical theories with community and practice perspectives.<\/p>\n<p>Students interested in following the Major Research Essay or Thesis option should discuss their intentions with both the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/english\/people\/henderson-jennifer\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">School\u2019s Graduate Supervisor Jennifer Henderson<\/a>\u00a0and other\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/canadianstudies\/our-team\/faculty\/\">faculty<\/a>\u00a0with related research interests. Additional information on <a href=\"https:\/\/calendar.carleton.ca\/grad\/gradprograms\/canadianstudies\/#regulationstext\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">graduate programme requirements.<\/a>\u00a0Some <a href=\"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/canadianstudies\/heritage-conservation\/readings-and-references\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">key resources on heritage conservation<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>At a more practice-oriented level, many students in Heritage Planning and Studies select to do a combination of coursework and <a href=\"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/canadianstudies\/practicum-placement\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">practicum placements<\/a> &#8211; which are unpaid internships that count for academic credit. Partners for these placements in the last few years have included Bytowne Museum, Contentworks, City of Ottawa, Heritage Ottawa, Lowertown Community Association, National Capital Commission, and Parks Canada. Students may identify other partners or seek advice related to their interests.
