Dr. Sattar is Professor Emeritus of Microbiology at the Faculty of Medicine, University of Ottawa. Though he retired from there as Full Professor after 33 years of service, he remains active in research, lecturing and other professional activities. He is a Registered Microbiologist of the Canadian College of Microbiologists and an elected Fellow of the American Academy of Microbiology.
His research deals with environmental/medical microbiology as it pertains to public health to understand better: (a) how human pathogens (disease-causing microbes) survive in the environment; (b) what factors affect their fate and transport and the potential for human exposure; (c) how the spread of infections can be interrupted through environmental control measures applied to water, air, food, wastes, as well as animate and inanimate surfaces. So far, he has generated over $22 million in peer-reviewed funding from local, provincial, national and international granting agencies as well as in research study contracts from the private sector.
