The\u00a0Jean Monnet Centre of Excellence<\/a>\u00a0and the Embassy of the Slovak Republic in Ottawa<\/a> are pleased to host a research seminar with Dr.\u00a0Mat\u00fa\u0161 Mi\u0161\u00edk on “Energy Transition in the European Union: Central and Eastern European Perspectives.” The lecturer will discuss the European Union’s strategies to combat climate change and how Central and Eastern European member states apply these strategies.<\/p>\n

The European Union developed a set of goals<\/a> that should help it on the way to the carbon-free future. However, member states can choose their own paths to achieve these goals. The\u00a0lecture examines how EU member countries from Central and Eastern Europe have been trying to change their energy systems to better cope with the requirements of carbon-free\u00a0economy. Their solution is different from other EU member states – not only they consider nuclear energy to be a part of the solution (and not of the problem as majority of countries\u00a0currently do), but they have approached renewable sources with suspicion and the schemes developed to support renewables expansion have paradoxically had negative impact on\u00a0their inclusion into the energy mix.<\/p>\n

Dr. Mi\u0161\u00edk is an Assistant Professor with the Department of Political Science at Comenius University in Bratislava, Slovakia. He is also currently a visiting scholar at Carleton University with the Jean Monnet Centre of Excellence and is teaching a graduate course<\/a> this fall term with the Institute of European, Russian and Eurasian Studies (EURUS)<\/a>.<\/p>\n
