And yet, in recent years, new waves of resistance have surfaced against so-called “gender ideology,” queer theory, and trans rights. Often, as in the case of Poland and Hungary, the opposition has been mounted by illiberal groups intent on undermining democratic institutions. Recently, liberal democracies have become sites of contestation around gender equality, reproductive rights, sex education, and transgender rights raising essential questions about the role, place, and legacy of anti-discrimination policies in today’s Europe.

About the event: In this one-day symposium, Drs. David Paternotte (Bruxelles), Paula Villa Braslavsky (LMU), and Andrea Petö (CEU) will participate in a public roundtable on the current state of anti-gender mobilizations in Europe today.
