Since the 2010s, Central and Eastern Europe has witnessed a surge in populism, with recent parliamentary elections in Hungary (2022), Poland, and Slovakia (2023) further cementing the prevalence of illiberalism in regional policies. Roman Krakovsky’s examination of the region’s long-term economic and political trends will shed light on the origins of this phenomenon. This historical perspective offers a crucial framework for understanding the intricate its different facets, tracking its evolution, and predicting its influence on the political and social landscape of Central and Eastern Europe.<\/span><\/p>\n

About the Speaker\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n

Roman Krakovsky is Assistant Professor in the Department of History at the University of Ottawa and holder of the Chair in Slovak History and Culture. In his research, he focuses on mechanisms of social cohesion and modernization in Central and Eastern Europe. He is the author of Le Populisme en Europe centrale et orientale<\/i> (2019), State and Society in Communist Czechoslovakia: Transforming the Everyday from WWII to the Fall of the Berlin Wall<\/i> (2018), and L\u2019Europe centrale et orientale de 1918 \u00e0 la chute du mur de Berlin<\/i> (2017).<\/p>\n
