The Centre for European Studies Jean Monnet Centre of Excellence, in cooperation with the Konrad Adenauer Foundation Ottawa, is pleased to co-host the EU Policy Talk<\/em>, \u201cNorth America, Europe, and Ukraine: A new era of Identity?\u201d with Dr. Russel Foster<\/a>,<\/a> King’s College London. This is an in-person event on the Carleton campus.<\/p>\n

About the Event: <\/strong>Identity is one of the most powerful political forces in the Western world today. Instead of fading into obscurity as post-Cold War scholars anticipated, identity has returned as a defining metric of politics. In Europe, an ongoing \u2018polycrisis\u2019 has manifested in identarian politics, including the rise of \u2018populism\u2019. In the United Kingdom, simmering tensions resulted in a messy Brexit characterised predominantly by identity, and in North America, traditional political systems and behaviours have been upended by political agents embroiled in unending \u2018culture wars\u2019. Most tragically, identity is at the heart of the ongoing brutal invasion of Ukraine, and the West\u2019s response. The Kremlin\u2019s warmongering has strengthened a sense of Western identity, but questions remain over how long it can endure. The presentation reassesses the importance of identity for the Ukraine war and its aftermath, but also for attempts to strengthen transatlantic bonds between North America, the United Kingdom, and the European Union.<\/p>\n

\"\" Russell Foster<\/strong> is the Konrad Adenauer Visiting Fellow on Transatlantic Relations, held at the Centre for European Studies at Carleton University, Ottawa. He is Associate Professor at the Department of European and International Studies at King\u2019s College London, UK. His scholarly focus is researching identity, nationalism, and transatlantic relations in the contemporary world. Dr. Foster is a Senior Fellow of the Atlantic Council of the United Kingdom.
